    About the Inn

Located in the impeccably restored home of a brick baron, Rachael’s Dowry is as elegant today as it was when it hosted George & Martha Washington in 1798. With beautiful gardens, a comfortable library and parlor, and a quiet location right in downtown Baltimore, you’ll want to call Rachael’s Dowry home.

Privately owned and renovated, Rachael’s Dowry BnB opened in April 2010, following a complete restoration of the historic home.  The six guest rooms are uniquely furnished with authentic antiques to reflect the original architectural style of a home built in the 18th Century.  Many of Baltimore’s attractions including the Baltimore Convention Center, Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, the National Aquarium, University of Maryland Medical Center/professional schools, Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Ravens M&T stadium are within a short walk.

  • Insider's Info

Travelers are always looking for memorable and relaxing experiences. Let’s discover more through the words of our innkeepers. Many thanks to Jacob Canal for sharing his own secrets with BBOnline.com!
Why do most travelers stay at your inn?

Our location is a quiet oasis in downtown, close to the ballparks, convention center, UM and Hopkins hospitals and the tourism / business district of the Inner Harbor. You can leave your car and walk to most things in Baltimore.

What are you best known for? What makes your inn unique? What do you love most about your inn?

Our luxury inn serves amazing breakfasts, is impeccably restored, clean and quiet. Historically, Rachael's Dowry was home to the Warners, a family involved in the Underground Railroad, and who hosted George and Martha Washington.

If someone has never been to your city, what is the #1 reason to come visit?

Baltimore is one of the most underrated cities in America, with history, culture, and an amazing food scene. It's truly America's industrial birthplace, and the home to our only National Shrine, Fort McHenry, where the Star Spangled Banner was written.

What’s the best compliment you have ever received about the inn?

This feels like home. We also get amazing compliments on our breakfasts, and on the very special history that this gorgeous building has hosted.

What’s the best kept secret about the area?

The whole city of Baltimore is one of America's best kept secrets with its awesome people and TONS of fun things to do for every age group and interest!

If a traveler is staying at your inn for 4 nights, what should he/she do in the area?

Where should I start? We have 8 live theaters, the Baltimore Symphony, the awesome Inner Harbor and all of the benefits that come from that. Camden Yards & the Babe Ruth birthplace are just feet from our inn, so baseball is always an option. Then... whether you are an art lover (3 major art museums), history lover (Ft McHenry, tons of awesome museums, some of the best African American museums in the country), animal lover (National Aquarium & Maryland Zoo), or foodie (Guinness Brewery, several James Beard winning chefs, blue crabs & oysters, many craft beer, spirit and wine makers), we've got you covered in Baltimore! Plus, we have festivals happening almost every weekend in town - especially over the summer months. Most guests say they have to come back because they couldn't see everything they wanted!

Is there anything within walking distance of your inn?

Baltimore gets an 85% walking score and we're right on the edge of downtown, so most things are walkable! Inner Harbor, the ballparks, the convention center & arena, the universities, the theater district, the big theaters, and the free bus system are all within just a few blocks of us.

What is your favorite restaurant/food in the area?

Crab cakes, oysters and pit beef are all must-do's in Baltimore, and we have tons of exceptional restaurants to get them from! Baltimore, because it was an industrial hub, has an extremely diverse culture, including all of the food / restaurants that the immigrants brought with them. Rachel' Dowry, breakfast

Greet your morning with a two-course gourmet breakfast cooked from scratch with local and seasonal ingredients. Our "foodie" cook was raised in Lancaster's Amish country, so fresh ingredients and healthy portions are standard, but her recipes are not.

A freshly baked starter (muffin, scone, doughnut, bread or biscuit) accompanies a seasonal fruit dish with yogurt or another homemade topping, our own granola, or maybe a surprise. Favorite main dishes include Eggs Rachael (an exceptional benedict variation), maple-cream stuffed french toast with seasonal fruit compotes or gooey homemade caramel pecan sauce, pancake stacks with variations like carrot cake, pumpkin spice or lemon ricotta. And of course enough sides to ensure you won't leave hungry.

We serve excellent locally-roasted Orinoco coffee and a great selection of Harney & Sons fine teas. In the afternoons you can treat yourself to homemade cookies or other delectables, and there's always a tipple of very tasty Brandy in the Library for your evening nightcap.

Breakfast is served from 8-9am in the dining room, and to-go bags are available for those with early meetings. We're happy to accommodate most dietary restrictions (please tell us ahead of time), and specialize in gluten free meals and baked goods that will delight!
