  • Introduction

    Charleston's Grandest Mansion

Completed in 1886, the Second Empire-style Wentworth Mansion offers a fine collection of antiques and a sumptuous atmosphere. This outstanding historic hotel originally debuted as the four-story private residence of Francis Silas Rodgers and his massive extensive family. He oversaw the creation of the mansion's brilliant architectural features, including wrought-iron ornamentation, hand-carved ceilings, parquet floors, marble fireplaces, and Tiffany stained-glass windows. He even created a winding staircase that led to a cupola that still resides atop the building today.

Take a short stroll to King Street offering world-class dining and shopping; pamper yourself with a spa treatment in the original stables; indulge in our award-winning Southern fare; take a ride through the historic district in a 1928 Model A Ford Sport Coupe.

Gracious hospitality, luxurious amenities, and thoughtful guest experiences await you at Charleston's grandest mansion.

  • History

    1865-1887

Francis Silas Rodgers, a wealthy cotton factor, phosphate manufacturer, and coastwise shipper marries Mare Elizabeth Evans Cochran and together they raise 13 children. Designed in the Second Empire style by architect Daniel G. Waynes, they guild an expansive and ornate home at 149 Wentworth Street.

    1920

Members of the Rodgers family sell the home to the Scottish Rite Cathedral Association for $100,000. The Scottish Rite Masons keep the home until 1940 when it is sold to the Atlantic Coast Insurance Company. It serves as the company headquarters until 1996.

    1997

Proprietor Richard Widman purchases Wentworth Mansion and begins an extensive $7 million renovation that preserves the home’s magnificent architectural features, including the inlaid floors, original staircase, and Tiffany glass while adding modern conveniences and luxurious bathrooms in order to transform the mansion into a one-of-a-kind historic inn.
