There are so many things to do and see, and this is one of our favorite spots. Explore the habitats of North American wildlife. It’s a great way to blend having fun outdoors and learning about our continent’s animal kingdom.

Here’s what you’ll find just a short drive from our front porch.

What is ZooAmerica

ZooAmerica is “committed to the conservation of North American wildlife and habitats.” This is not your typical zoo. As you walk through this 11-acre park, you’ll see animals that are native to North America. Some of these include reptiles, mountain lions, otters, bobcats, a variety of birds, and more. They represent animals from five different North American regions.

This wildlife park is not just focused on conservation. They also educate people about North American wildlife and where they live. You’ll learn about their natural habitats, the food they eat, their natural instincts, and more. Here are just a few of the programs they have available for groups.

• A to Zoo: Learn the ABCs in a wild way
• Animals in Winter: Learn how animals survive cold winter seasons
• Desert Habitats: Learn about their ecology and how animals survive
• Paws, Claws, Scales & Tails: Learn how they use what they have to survive

What to Expect at ZooAmerica

Book your visit early. Weekends are generally the most popular times during summer and fall. Here is what you need to know before you go.

• Hours: Open year-round 10 am – 4:30 pm (except Thanksgiving and Christmas Day). Check their schedule for specific days.
• Tickets: There are various options from 1-day passes to group rates. Check their website for the most current options and prices.
• Map: They have a downloadable version. You can also get their app for either Apple or Android.
• Parking & Directions: Their parking lot address is 201 Park Avenue. If that lot is full, overflow can park in the Hershey Press Building parking lot.  ZooAmerica is only a 10-minute drive away from the inn. Just jump back on US-422 WE and turn right onto Park Ave.
• Zoovenirs: Don’t forget to stop by their gift shop.

1. Hershey Didn’t Succeed Right Away

This list wouldn’t be complete with facts about Milton Hershey, the founder of The Hershey Company, who didn’t have an easy path to success. After dropping out of school at 13, he tried (and failed) to start multiple candy businesses. It wasn’t until he launched the Lancaster Caramel Company that he finally struck gold—or rather, caramel. 2. America’s First Mass-Produced Milk Chocolate Was Born Here

In 1900, Hershey produced the first mass-produced milk chocolate bar in the United States. Up until then, milk chocolate was considered a luxury item, mostly made in Europe. Milton Hershey’s innovation made it affordable and accessible to the everyday American, forever changing the candy industry.
