Originally hailed as Yerba Buena, this city is now called San Francisco. It did not take long for The City by the Bay to become a tony enclave with grand Nob Hill mansions, luxurious hotels and ostentatious style. In 1906, the devastating earthquake and fire brought SF to its knees. But rebuilding quickly ensued and many of the sites and architecture we enjoy today happened during this renaissance. During the stock market crash of 1929 and ensuing years the famous Bay and Golden Gate Bridges projects began and were completed between 1936 and 1937. Also during this period, Alcatraz, now a famous tourist attraction, held some notable inmates such as the Birdman of Alcatraz – Robert Franklin Stroud and Al Capone. San Francisco tends to have a cool climate and is famous for its picturesque fog across its bridges. Although we cannot be certain, it is fabled that Mark Twain said of the climate "The coldest winter I ever saw was the summer I spent in San Francisco." Tourists take note, a jacket is required! A jacket of a different nature may be required when dining in some of SF’s world renowned dining establishments. Some that must be mentioned are Fleur de Lys, Farallon, Michael Mina and Spruce to name a few. There are so many neighborhoods, landmarks, parks and events to see there are just too many to name here. But rest assured, rather it’s a bike ride thru Golden Gate Park, a day of music in Union Square or cocktails at the Top of the Mark, you won’t spend one moment of boredom is this fair city. Less
