Voted the 5th most desirable destination to visit in 2013 by the NY Times, this is the busiest port city of San Francisco Bay - Oakland. Six miles across the bay from San Francisco this city was named for its oak trees that spanned from modern day downtown Oakland to Alameda. Oakland literally doubled in size after the 1906 earthquake left thousands of people homeless, and sought refuge in the nearby city. Oakland is filled with many things to do and something for every taste from the Oakland Zoo, Lake Merritt, Fairyland, Jack London Square and the Chabot Space and Science Center. Some notables from this Oakland are Gertrude Stein, Bruce Lee, Clint Eastwood and Tom Hanks. A fabulous dining town as well, some of the great haunts include Ozumo, Bay Wolf, and Picán. A fun food fact is that Rocky Road ice cream was invented here. Also a great sports enthusiasts destination, it is home of the Oakland Athletics, The Oakland Raiders and the Golden State Warriors. Do during your next trip to the Bay Area, include Oakland on your itinerary. You won’t be sorry. Less
