More About Louisiana

Named in honor of King Louis XIV, Louisiana is a hub for Southern culture and home to fantastic street parties during the week of Mardigras. Historical tidbits include the first Tarzan moving being filmed there in 1917 and the town, Jean Lafitte, which was once a hideaway for Pirates. Louisiana is the only state with a large population of Cajuns and more than 40 percent of U.S. grain exports move through Louisiana ports making it the nation's largest handler of grain exports to world markets. More than one-half of the species of birds in North America are resident in Louisiana or spend a portion of their migration there. Parts of the Mississippi River delta plain near New Orleans lie below sea level.
