    The Iris Inn living room

    The Iris Inn at nighttime

Guests Voted Iris Inn 2010 Best Of The Mid-Atlantic

Dave and Heidi Lanford invite you to indulge in a relaxing retreat at the Iris Inn Bed and Breakfast, a 12-acre retreat that stands amidst the stunning Blue Ridge Mountains of the Shenandoah Valley.

Enjoy the many nearby activities such as wine and beer tasting, tours of presidential homes, hiking, shopping, swimming, or simply driving the Blue Ridge Parkway and looking out across Skyline Drive. The Inn is secluded enough for relaxation, yet only minutes from cultural hubs like Charlottesville, Staunton, and Harrisonburg. After a day's excursion, enjoy a complimentary wine tasting back at the Inn. Help yourself to the always-available cookie jar, a hot cup of coffee, or a selection of tea. Relax with a couple's massage, or celebrate an anniversary with chocolate-covered strawberries and champagne. Unwind in the bubbling waters of a hot tub, or read on the front porch with a glass of wine in hand.

    The Iris Inn Great Room

Carefully conceived and built to bring people and nature together and respectful of the needs of both; the Iris Inn hearkens back to simpler times when the gathering of family and friends constitutes an event. The Great Room offers such a gathering place. The room features a 3-story stone fireplace and an expansive hand painted Shenandoah Woodlands canvas by Clara Thompson. French doors lead to the back deck where you can watch the birds feeding as the squirrels and chipmunk scamper by.

Overlooking the Great Room is a loft library where you can get to know the season's bestseller or play a favorite game. All rooms have private access to outdoor decks with plenty of seating to enjoy the scenery, read a book or take a snooze. If you'd rather relax in your room, sit back and enjoy a show on your own flat screen tv, or grab your laptop and surf the internet with our free Wi-fi.

Travel and Leisure Magazine rated Virginia as "one of five up-and-coming wine destinations in the world." Wind your way through Virginia's countryside to visit any (or all!) of 28 wineries, all within 30 minutes the Iris Inn.

Wake up refreshed in the morning, and peer out the window to see what wildlife has come to visit--deer, chipmunks, squirrels, and a huge array of birds. Toss the ball to our sweet border collie Katie, and watch as she rolls it back to you. (Say, "Katie, tail!" and you'll be treated one of her favorite antics.) Between 8 and 9:30 a.m. enjoy a full service breakfast in the Great Room. Depart rested and renewed with memories you can share with loved ones for days to come.

  • Insider's Info

Travelers are always looking for memorable and relaxing experiences. Let’s discover more through the words of our innkeepers. Many thanks to Dave & Heidi for sharing their own secrets with!
Why do most travelers stay at your inn?

Many of our guests are looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life and work, and find a retreat in our luxury accommodations which overlook the Shenandoah valley.

What are you best known for? What makes your inn unique? What do you love most about your inn?

Our luxury couples cabins, amazing view of the sunset over the Shenandoah valley, and our deliciously full breakfasts really set us apart from other inns and B&B's. With our modern accommodations, wine hour, and full staff, we definitely break the mold of what most people preconceive about B&B's.

If someone has never been to your city, what is the #1 reason to come visit?

It's so hard to pick a #1! The top 3 attractions that draw people to our area are the wineries and breweries, hiking in the Shenandoah national forest, and historical sites like Thomas Jefferson's home, Monticello. Waynesboro itself is a small, quaint town situated perfectly between Charlottesville and Staunton, on top of the Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive.

What’s the best compliment you have ever received about the inn?

We have outstanding tripadvisor reviews that truly speak for themselves. That in itself is all the compliment we could ever ask for. We're delighted when guests tell us how wonderful their stay has been.

What’s the best kept secret about the area?

If a traveler is staying at your inn for 4 nights, what should he/she do in the area?

Hiking--one of our favorites is Crab Tree Falls; visiting local wineries, breweries, cideries; shop at area stores and restaurants here in Waynesboro, Staunton, and Charlottesville; and if you like Shakespeare, catch a play at the Black Friar's Playhouse in Staunton.

Is there anything within walking distance of your inn?

No, but we are a 5 minutes drive from the Rock Fish Gap and 5 minutes from downtown Waynesboro.

What is your favorite restaurant/food in the area?

We are constantly recommending the Green Leaf grill here in Waynesboro. Guests are always pleased with the food and the service, not to mention the laid back atmosphere and assortment of menu items makes the Green Leaf hard to beat.

Any good area guides/websites that travelers could reference?

How many rooms does your inn have?

All total we have 15 accommodations, 6 couples cabins, 3 cottages, and 6 rooms in the main inn building.

    Do you accept pets?

We do! Our Garden Path Cottage and Deep Woods Cottage rooms are both pet friendly for a small pet fee.
