National Collector Car Appreciation Day 11 Jul 2013, 6:18 pm

The Chrysler Car Show is happening in Carlisle this weekend.  July 12th is National Collector Car Appreciation Day!  We appreciate our car collectors who stay with us at Pheasant Field B&B.

Welcome all MOPAR visitors!

What's happening in Carlisle PA 9 Jul 2013, 8:16 pm

Last weekend we had a number of Gettysburg 150th re-enactors staying with us. And even more guests who attended activities in and around Gettysburg.  The weather was hot and humid - just like it was 150 years ago!  Traffic was a bit of a challenge on the first day but all of guests got that figured out and enjoyed their experience there.  We are fortunate to live in the heart of all this history and live in a home where freedom seekers found safe harbor for a short time on their journey to freedom.

The Chryslers are coming to Carlisle this weekend!  The weather forecast is predicting beautiful weather for this event!   Bring your sunscreen and enjoy the car show!

Be sure to bring your lawn chair for Bluegrass on the Grass on the lawn at Dickinson College this weekend. So if you are not a MOPAR fan, enjoy some music this weekend in Carlisle, PA!

Gettysburg 150 years later... 26 Jun 2013, 6:20 pm

The Reenactors are coming to Pheasant Field B&B!

Tomorrow a "Union Army Surgeon" checks in to Pheasant Field B&B with his lovely lady.  They will be participating in educational sessions on the battlefield, marching in the parade and attending other events at Gettysburg.
On Sunday, members of the 8th Illinois Cavalry stop here at Pheasant Field to rest their horses before moving on to Gettysburg for the battle.

Now you may think that hosting troops here is just a story that I fabricated, but read what the late Robert Grant Crist described as happening on June 28th, 1863:

"When the Lord’s Day began, the old devil Jenkins was camped out near Hickorytown 13 miles west of the Susquehanna River."

There is a very good chance that troops were camp right here at Pheasant Field farm because there was water available for their horses right across the road from our B&B.   There were also 2 Taverns in the little village of Hickorytown so the officers could have had very nice accommodations while the rest of the troops camped by our pond.
Joseph Cress recently wrote about the occupation of Mechanicsburg in our local newspaper. Read on.

If you would like to attend all the events in Carlisle and Gettysburg in remembrance of that battle, you're in luck.  We just had a cancellation so one room is open for July 3 & 4.  Make your reservation now!

While Gettysburg has captured the headlines, there are lots of other happenings in the Carlisle area - Summerfair 2013 has fun for all ages and it's all FREE!  This celebration is the very best of "Small Town USA"!  Come for history and have some local fun too!

Summer in the country 14 Jun 2013, 7:17 pm

Fireflies & Bullfrogs!  Those are just two things that tell me summer is here.  There is nothing quite like sitting on the front porch swing at dusk and watching the fireflies do their lightening/courting dance. Come to Pheasant Field B&B for a relaxing time this summer!

Today we stacked 200 bales of hay in our 200-year old barn.  It may be summer now but the grass will turn brown in a few months and the horses will enjoy the wonderful timothy hay we stored away for them today.  ...all in a day's work at Pheasant Field B&B!

This weekend we welcome Alumni from Dickinson College.  Everyone is out tonight for the parties in town.  Tomorrow morning one of our alums will go out for some fly fishing. So that means an early breakfast of waffles topped with fresh (just picked today) strawberries!

Next weekend we look forward to welcoming our usual GM Car Show crew! Bobby Allison, a NASCAR legend, will be in Carlisle during the show next week.

At the end of June, you can meet the real hero from the movie "Argo". The Carlisle Theatre will feature "Argo" along with a Q&A time with Tony and Jonna Mendez.  This special event is a fund raiser to benefit the Theatre.

Things to do in Carlisle PA 30 May 2013, 7:00 pm

June 1st is the date for Foundry Day in Boiling Springs.  This juried arts & crafts festival has a 27 year history in Boiling Springs.  The crafts are top quality, the setting is beautiful,  the "fair food" is wonderful, and the day will be fun for all who attend.
The show runs from 9 AM to 4 PM. (Here's a tip from an "innsider": go at about 2 PM and the crowd will have thinned a bit.)
There will be some fun entertainment too.  Don't miss this great small town festival with high quality crafts!

Next weekend brings the FORDs to town for the Carlisle Ford Nationals.  I have to admit that I am a bit partial to this show since I purchased my Ford Fusion Hybrid. I am now getting 40 MPG -- that's right! 40 MPG!  ...ya gotta love it!

The Carlisle Theatre has some wonderful events coming up!  You can see "Les Miserables"  on the big screen this weekend (Here's another "innsider" tip: attend movies at Carlisle Theatre for FREE when you stay at Pheasant Field B&B!).
On June 7th, Chris Collins and the Boulder Canyon Band will present "A Tribute to John Denver".  Take me home country roads - all the way to Pheasant Field B&B!

Last weekend we hosted our first outdoor wedding and reception of the year.  We really enjoyed this special couple and all their family!  It was a very breezy day but with the sides on the tent and all the dancing, everyone felt the warmth of Gina & Dillon's love!
Here they are at work!
We wish Gina & Dillon many years of joy and love together!  I'll post more wedding pictures on our FaceBook page when they are available.
This is just after the ceremony...

Mother's Day Weekend 27 Apr 2013, 2:23 pm

Mother's Day is just 2 weeks away! We have just a few rooms open for that weekend so it's time to reserve your room to treat Mom! Here are some ideas for you:  Check-in at Pheasant Field B&B; Dinner at Boiling Springs Tavern; See a show ("Happy Days - A New Musical") at Allenberry Theatre; Sleep well and enjoy a full country breakfast at the B&B; Head off to enjoy the Wine & Fruit Trail where there is very special treat for Mom at Reid's Orchard & Winery.

You can enjoy the tour of the apple orchards on your way to the winery and maybe take in some history around Gettysburg before returning to the B&B or heading home.

It's all for Mom!

Back in January 2012, I told you about our new Generac Generator.  Today I have to tell you how much I LOVE IT!!!!!  The power went off in our neighborhood this morning at about 5:15 AM while I was in the kitchen preparing breakfast for my guests (yes - we do serve very early!).  Of course, at that hour of the morning, all went black in the kitchen - but only for 30 seconds!  Then I heard our Generac kick on and, voila! I was back in business with coffee brewing and the griddle warming-up!  The installation of that generator was one of the BEST investments/insurance policies we've ever purchased! It had me doing my "happy dance" at 5:15 AM! Sorry, Chuck was not out of bed at that hour to take a picture of my happy dance...

Happy Spring!  Happy Mother's Day!

What's blooming in Carlisle, PA 21 Apr 2013, 5:32 pm

WELCOME to Pheasant Field B&B!
It's spring and things are really blooming here at Pheasant Field B&B near Carlisle, PA!  We have other signs of spring here at the farm -- our equestrian "snowbirds" are making their way north.  Some of those guests know that they will see snow when they get home but while they're here, they can enjoy some of our spring blossoms. Enjoy these pictures taken around the property:
The view from our front porch.

Enjoy a flowery walk near the pond.
This is the view as you enter our driveway...

...a closeup of one of the blooms...

This tree is always SO beautiful in the spring!

Visiting pups - so well mannered!

Even the horses see beautiful trees as they much on new shoots of tender grass.

Remember that the first car show of the year happens in Carlisle next weekend. We have a room open on Thursday night and one on Saturday night. So come to Carlisle in the spring for cars, fishing, antiquing, or hiking!

Spring herbs 12 Apr 2013, 6:55 pm

The warm weather has been wonderful for our little herb garden.  This week I used my first fresh - really fresh - herbs from my own property!  There are fresh chives, which I used in an egg dish, and fresh parsley which I used mostly for garnish.  But it is so nice to be able to just run outside and cut the chives as I'm ready to use them!

I remember when... My grandmother used to cut dandelion and make a wonderful salad with the tender young plants. Of course, she would make her own hot bacon dressing to make it yummy (and maybe a bit less healthy). I have been adding a few young sprouts of dandelion to my own salads at lunch time.  Make sure you find young plants so they are still tender and sweet.  I read a blog last week from a local plant guru who wrote that the wild onions growing in the lawns can also be used for cooking!  I think I will have to try it!
The other wonderful garnish that's available now are pansies!  Yes, you can eat them, but mostly they dress up a plate of special eggs and make the whole look pretty!

Whatever your favorite spring herbs are, go use the really fresh stuff available right now!

Quilts, quilts, and MORE QUILTS! 4 Apr 2013, 3:53 pm

This is a small wall hanging.
It's time for the PA Relief Sale at the PA Farm Show Complex!  Hundreds of beautiful quilts will go up for bid at this annual auction sponsored by the Mennonite Central Committee.  All proceeds are used to fund world-wide relief - from famine, disasters, and diseases - mostly in third-world countries.  You can help by purchasing one of these fine quilts - all made by volunteers!  There is also wonderful food, more items to buy, and fun entertainment.  Don't miss this one!  The Relief auction starts on Friday evening (4/5/13) at 6:30 PM and will continue on Saturday until all the quilts have been sold.
I think this is my favorite!

This is the season for horsey "snowbird" visitors at Pheasant Field B&B!  We are having a rather steady stream of horses - and their owners - stopping by on their way to Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, upstate NY, Maine, Quebec, and Ontario. If you are on your way north on I-81 and need a place to stop with your horse, we are the place to layover in PA - providing gracious accommodations for man and beast!
