Ocean House Inn Bed and Breakfast began as a beach cottage built in the 1930's on a forested bluff overlooking Agate Beach just north of Newport, OR. The last family to use it as a home, converted it to a bed and breakfast in 1986 after their children were grown. A few years later, as the demand grew for this beautiful spot, they began to add more bedrooms in an expansion over the top of the original cottage. Eventually the footprint of the home was extended to include eight spacious bedrooms with private baths, each with breathtaking views of the sea and nearby headlands as well. Featured in a Sunset magazine article in February 2004 as the best place to stay in Newport, this B&B consistently receives the high praise of travelers from all over the world. Ownership has changed over the years but Ocean House Inn continues the tradition of beauty, comfort, and charm first found in the original beach cottage.

  • Insider's Info

Travelers are always looking for memorable and relaxing experiences. Let’s discover more through the words of our innkeepers. Many thanks to Craig and Dawn Lodge for sharing their own secrets with BBOnline.com!
Why do most travelers stay at your inn?

A lot of our guests are celebrating a special occasion in their lives, like a birthday, anniversary, or honeymoon. Others just want to unplug from the hustle and bustle of the real world. Others are traveling the coast and stop for a reprieve.

What are you best known for?

Our Inn is ocean front, known for bird, wildlife and whale watching.

    What makes your inn unique?

Our Inn has varied decor in each room, with lots of private space and comfortable common spaces to mingle.

What do you love most about your inn?

I love the fact that each day is different. The scene outside my window is always changing and the strength and beauty of the Pacific is always with us.

If someone has never been to your city, what is the #1 reason to come visit?

I think the Ocean is the first draw to Newport, Oregon. Traveling the coast gives a person a different perspective of the Pacific Northwest. The sun really does shine here!

What’s the best compliment you have ever received about the inn?

We receive many compliments. I especially like the fact that guests can truly unwind and reconnect to what is most important to them.

What’s the best kept secret about the area?

Although Oregon coast is known for rain, there are beautiful days filled with sunshine, but not hot and humid. Perfect for a relaxing time at the beach with a glass of wine and a cozy fire, either inside or out.

If a traveler is staying at your inn for 4 nights, what should he/she do in the area?

I would suggest a visit to the Aquarium and the Hatfield Marine Science Center, charter a boat for some fishing or whale watching up close and personal, visit the two lighthouses in Newport, explore small wineries in the area, visit variety of artist studios, and learn to blow glass. There are many hiking trails and the Rogue brewery tour. Newport is also home to a visual and performing art center, with many performances and exhibits year round.

Is there anything within walking distance of your inn?

The Yaquina Head Lighthouse and BLM Natural area is a 20 minute walk from our front door.

What is your favorite restaurant/food in the area?

Newport area is blessed with many great restaurants, from casual to fine dining. My favorite depends on the day, seafood, chowder, Irish fare and farm-to-table delights as well as fine French cuisine.

Any good area guides/websites that travelers could reference?

I would recommend Newport Chamber of Commerce, Oregon Coast travel guide and Oregon Bed and Breakfast guild.

How many rooms does your inn have?

We offer eight different rooms, each comfortable with fireplaces, private baths and sitting areas. Each one offers a unique theme and views of the ocean.

    Do you accept pets?

We do not have accommodations for pets that travel. Here are two alternatives in the area recommended by a local vet clinic; Critter Comfort 'N Care & Critter Cottage. 960 SE Highway 101, Suite D, Lincoln City, Oregon, www.crittercomfortncare.com. 541-996-7434 or Olivia's Doggy Day Care and Boarding. Toledo, Oregon. 541-961-5821.
