  • Insider's Info

Travelers are always looking for memorable and relaxing experiences. Let’s discover more through the words of our innkeepers. Many thanks to Carolyn and Dina Giunta for sharing their own secrets with BBOnline.com!
Why do most travelers stay at your inn?

Comfort and convenience. We have a comfortable style of Inn that makes most people feel like they are visiting friends instead of staying at a stuffy B&B with antiques and doilies. We are also located in a town that is centrally located in Western North Carolina. It allows our guests to do all there is to do in this area and use us as a central location for their "home" base.

What are you best known for? What makes your inn unique? What do you love most about your inn?

We are best known for our one-story, ranch-style Inn that is easier to get around in because there are no stairs to climb, there's also never anyone walking around above you. We also have the best views of the Balsam Mountain Range, located just behind our Inn. Our guests love to sit out on our back terrace overlooking the mountains and listen to the waterfall and the birds sing while sipping a glass of wine. It’s very peaceful and relaxing.

If someone has never been to your city, what is the #1 reason to come visit?

The #1 reason to come to Waynesville would have to be its central location in Western North Carolina. You don't have to travel very far to get to where you'd like to go in the area. It also has great restaurants, shops and even an award-winning theatre!

What’s the best compliment you have ever received about the inn?

"This is the cleanest place I have ever stayed while traveling!" We hear this all the time and love it! We clean as if we were the guests staying in the room next. We feel cleanliness is one of the most important things we can do for our guests.

What’s the best kept secret about the area?

The beautiful scenery. Our new "tag line" is: Come for the scenery, stay for the adventure!

If a traveler is staying at your inn for 4 nights, what should he/she do in the area?

The Biltmore Estate, Great Smoky Mountain National Park, horseback riding, gem mining, mountain golfing, white water rafting, kayaking, hiking, zip lines, canopy tours, rock climbing, waterfall tour, Blue Ridge Parkway, Cherokee reservation and casino, Pisgah National Forest, Dupont State Forest, Chimney Rock, mountain biking, shopping, antiquing, boating on Lake Fontana, microbrewery tours and tastings, HART Theatre, museums, Arboretum, farmers' markets, the list goes on and on and on. This area is mostly known for its outdoor adventures, as you can see from the above list of things to do.

Is there anything within walking distance of your inn?

Downtown Waynesville is only a little over one mile from our Inn. We also have Waynesville Golf and Country Club right across the street with three, 9-hole golf courses.

What is your favorite restaurant/food in the area?

We have so many to choose from; this is a hard question to answer! Chef's Table, Sweet Onion, Frogs Leap Public House, Blossom Thai Fusion, Bourbon Barrel Beef and Ale, Boojum's Brewery and Bocelli's are probably our favorites.

Any good area guides/websites that travelers could reference?

We have a 12-page travel guide built into our website for travelers to make choices about what they would like to do while in the area. Go to http://www.brooksidemountainmistbb.com/travel-guide/upcoming-waynesville-events.htm

How many rooms does your inn have?

We have a total of 5 rooms plus two, extended-stay cottages.

    Do you accept pets?

We do not accept pets but work with a local boarder called Creature Comforts. We have a link to them at http://www.crecomfortwnc.com/.

  • Our Story

    Brookside Mountain Mist Inn

In 1950, Pat and Bill Prevost built a new home for their growing family. They didn’t have far to move, as their new house was built right next door! Bill was the developer of the Maggie Valley Golf and Country Club. Pat was an accomplished, amateur golfer. Her name is still seen on plaques at both the Waynesville and Maggie Valley Country Clubs.

This one-story, ranch-style home remained in the Prevost family for many years but was eventually sold to Richard and Joanna Swanson. The Swanson’s were the first to transform this family home into a bed and breakfast inn. Their concept was to provide a vegetarian, health-centered retreat for those struggling with various ailments. The original name of the bed and breakfast was Mountain Mist Inn. It was owned by the Swanson’s for about ten years.

Mountain Mist Inn was then sold to Ken and Mary Malmstrom. The Malmstroms renamed it Brookside Mountain Mist Inn and transformed it into a more traditional bed and breakfast. Ken and Mary were also instrumental in making significant renovations to the building, brining it more up-to-date. They owned the bed and breakfast for approximately five years.

Brookside Mountain Mist Inn was then sold to its current owners, Carolyn and Dina Giunta. Carolyn is a retired chiropractor and Dina a massage therapist, both from Florida. Their exhaustive search for a bed and breakfast ended upon entering the foyer of this elegant home. The five oversized guestrooms, huge picture windows and back terrace overlooking the mountains all contributed to the selection of Brookside Mountain Mist Inn for their bed and breakfast. Carolyn and Dina have made additional, extensive renovations to the building including all new bathrooms, a guest services room, central heat and air in the common areas and individual heating and air conditioning systems in each guest room.

In April 2019, we opened our two, extended-stay cottages. These cottages allow our guests to stay with us a whole different way then B&B style. The cottages offer more privacy and lower per night pricing because they don't come with all of the amenities of the B&B. With fully equipped kitchens and washer/dryers, they are designed for longer stays without the need to go out to eat for every meal.

We are often asked how we ended up becoming innkeepers at a bed and breakfast. Having worked in healthcare for many years, it had become second nature to want to take care of people in some way. We also wanted a home based business that would allow us to continue working for ourselves. In addition, Dina had extensive background in the food industry, having owned her own restaurant in Florida for nine years. All of these factors, as well as Carolyn being a “people-person”, lead us into the bed and breakfast world. Innkeeping is certainly tough work, but well worth the time and effort. We love what we do and we hope it shows in everything we do for our guests.

Brookside Mountain Mist Inn & Cottages is located in Waynesville, North Carolina, in the heart of the Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountains. Our central location in western North Carolina is ideal for exploring the surrounding area’s numerous attractions and outdoor adventures. Waynesville is surrounded by The Great Smoky Mountain, Pisgah and Nantahala National Parks. Each park offers various outdoor activities such as hiking, off-road biking, white-water rafting, zip-line rides, picnicking, waterfalls and historic landmarks. Waynesville also played a part in our country’s history as being the site of the last shot fired in the Civil War, east of the Mississippi River.

Located just a mile away is Main Street in downtown Waynesville, a shopper's delight with art galleries, antiques, clothing, jewelry and great food. Whether you're looking for a souvenir or high-end furniture, or just window-shopping, the rewards of a stroll along the brick sidewalks are plentiful. Enjoy the quaint and relaxed atmosphere; take a break and put the bags down at one of several cafés. Head down the hill to Frog Level, the revitalized railroad district, for even more galleries and furniture shops.

Of course, no trip to western North Carolina would be complete without touring the Biltmore Estate in Asheville. Just a short, 25-minute drive from Brookside Mountain Mist Inn, Asheville also offers unique shopping venues and restaurants, the Arboretum and Farmer’s Market, to name just a few attractions.

Come to western North Carolina for the scenery, stay for the adventure!
