The Sand Castle Bed and Breakfast

The Sand Castle Celebrates its 20th Anniversary! 10 May 2019, 5:09 pm

Twenty years ago the Sand Castle Bed and Breakfast was just a dream. The Innkeeper, Nancy Gallimore, a former English teacher and co-owner of a commercial fishing operation decided to reinvent herself and her property after a divorce changed the course of her life. “When the idea came to me, via my realtor Benee Scola, I began researching the bed and breakfast industry and read a book titled “So You Want to Be an Innkeeper”, Nancy reminisced.

Long Beach Island, NJ was the right location and at the time there were no upscale properties so work began to convert her home to a luxury B & B. With the encouragement and help of many friends, opening day came in April 2000 and the town locals and the public embraced the new property.

“Some of my earliest guests from 2000 are still enjoying the Sand Castle”, Nancy proudly states. One reason for that fact is due to her diligence in keeping the property maintained and upgraded. But when you read the online reviews and speak with guests as I do, the greatest factor is Nancy’s warm welcoming nature and how much she cares about her guests’ comfort. Oh and I can’t neglect to mention her secret scone recipe (as well as breakfast) which people rave about!

My name is Joe and I am proud to be assisting at the Sand Castle now and to be part of Nancy’s life. I hope if you are reading this, I will meet you at the Sand Castle some time soon. It will be a relaxing experience like no other.

Wonderful Weekend of Kite Flying! 4 Nov 2017, 4:11 pm

If you haven’t attended the LBI Kite Fest, you must mark your calendars now for next year.  Held each year on Columbus Day weekend, the organizers meticulously plan three days of just plain fun for families, couples and individuals alike.

A demonstration and competition of indoor kite flying by professionals from all over the country and Canada is held Friday night.  Individual flying routines, choreographed to music was very interesting to watch.  This past season, the weather was beautiful, a clear, crisp fall day with plenty of wind to highlight the huge variety of kites……fish, sharks, a witch on her broom, Pegasus, characters of all sorts….some so huge they were tethered, flying high above the spectators!

But perhaps the most spectacular sight occurred Sunday night at the Barnegat Lighthouse.  The night fly of illuminated kites was just magical…..as well as the thousands of people watching, all decked out in their glow necklaces everywhere you looked.  The spotlights on the lighthouse were not illuminated that night so the kites could dominate the sky.  Static displays of minions and dragons added to the fun, while children ran around in their skeleton costumes, squealing with joy.

A big thank you to all the Kitefest Volunteers and the South Jersey Kite Fliers Association.  We at the Sand Castle hope this tradition continues year after year.

Wine, Cheese and History in Barnegat Light 15 Aug 2014, 5:45 am

Sunday, August
24th marks the annual Barnegat Light Historical Society’s Open House
Wine & Cheese Party.
The event, a
yearly favorite, is a great time to mingle with locals and explore the
beautiful building.  Once a
one-room school for Barnegat Light (from 1903 to 1954), the building is on the National
Register of Historical Places. It holds artifacts, replicas and photographs
that show the history of Barnegat Light and Long Beach Island.
Not to be missed – the First Order Flashing Lens from the Barnegat
Light Lighthouse, built by French Physicist, Augustin Fresnel. The lens was
capable of throwing its light more than 20 to the horizon. There are also
several artifacts and replicas from the fishing industry, like a replica of a
Pound Fishing Net, a fishing method popular from the 1880’s to 1955.
You’ll
want to show up early to make the most of your time. The event runs from 4 pm
to 7 pm at 5th and Central Avenues and it’s a short and easy walk from the Sand Castle Bed and Breakfast. If it seems familiar, you may have been there recently when I presented a slideshow of my travels and wildlife encounters.

Barnegat Light Garden a ‘Hidden’ Gem 19 Jul 2014, 7:47 pm

If you love the feeling of stumbling upon a hidden garden,
you’re in for a real treat! Barnegat Light is home to one of the most beautiful
flower gardens on Long Beach Island. It’s a delightful place to clear your
head, read a good book, or stroll with a friend.
The Edith Duff Gwinn Garden, is located behind the Barnegat
Light Museum, at 5th and Central Avenues. Edith Duff Gwinn and Frances Selover worked
to beautify this nook of Barnegat Light for many years. Their successors,
members of the Long Beach Island Garden Club, continue their work today.
The garden is open every day and provides a lovely place for
inspiration. If you pop by on Mondays from May till November, you’ll find
members of the club planning, planting and enjoying the sun.
The Edith Duff Gwinn Garden is within walking distance to
the Sand Castle Bed and Breakfast. To get there: Walk northeast on Bayview
Ave toward W 7th Street, turn right onto W 6th Street and
left on Central Avenue.
Happy wandering,

Viking Village dock tours return for summer! 30 Jun 2014, 1:57 pm

Viking Village fishing dock tours are back!
From now through August 29th,
visitors to Viking Village can get it on the action by touring the fishing
dock at Viking Village every Friday at 10 am… rain or shine.
The tour starts outside the main storage building with an
overview of the dock’s 90-year history and the kinds of fishing that are done
from there.  You’ll get to see
scallops being shucked, bagged and iced at sea. The swordfish, tuna, and yellowfin that are caught will be placed on hooks. Other fish will be caught
in nets. As the tour progresses, you’ll see the landing and grading areas too.
It’s non-stop action. While boats return to port at all
hours, Viking Village tries to time at least one boat to arrive for off-loading
during the tour. There will also be a chef demonstrating how to cook of the
day’s catch.
Every year, the dock handles approximately 2 million pounds
of scallops and fishing boats unload more than 5 million pounds of seafood there.

If you’re unable to attend on a Friday morning, you can
still walk the dock and tour the village on your own. You can also taste some
of the catch at nearby restaurants.

Plan ahead and stay overnight at the Sand Castle Bed &Breakfast to make the most of your trip to Barnegat Light, New Jersey. The B&B is within walking distance
to the docks.

See you soon,
