The only Orvis endorsed lodge in the state, our "six star" facility is located in the rolling hills of this remote county. Our family farm for over 100 years adjoins Heartland Lodge.
Harpole's Heartland Lodge was specifically built to emulate the serenity and tranquility found only in the country. The meals alone are enough to make you want to stay... but don't forget the fresh country beds with feather pillows, recreational activities, and the sheer exhilaration of being in the great outdoors!
Harpole's Heartland Lodge is unequaled as a perfect "getaway" for weekends, over nighters, retreats, corporate meetings and conferences. The lodges contain over 7500 and 9300 square feet of air conditioned comfort, with 11 regular rooms, a family room, a suite and seven luxury suites. These rooms have King size, triple sheeted canopy beds, private Jaccuzzi, walkout porch, fireplace, and is decorated according to its theme.
A unique ambiance will permeate your senses when you step through the door of this Illinois Bed & Breakfast. As soon as you slip off your shoes to glide over the gleaming solid oak floors of the dining room toward the Great Room, you'll notice the delicious aroma of "Grandma's" cooking wafting through the air. As you marvel at the two-story stone fireplace, the Remington statues, the inviting sofas and chairs, and gaze out the floor-to-ceiling windows, you will catch a glimpse of the hundreds of Yellow Finches nesting in the trees around the lodge.
The temptation to step out onto the large back deck is irresistible. Fresh air washes over you as you sink into one of the Amish-crafted rocking chairs. Only the occasional bird song breaks the blessed sound of silence that envelops the countryside.
Travelers are always looking for memorable and relaxing experiences. Let’s discover more through the words of our innkeepers. Many thanks to Gary and Wanda Harpole for sharing their own secrets with BBOnline.com! Why do most travelers stay at your inn?
They are looking for a relaxing getaway in an upscale environment with plenty of activities to enjoy.
What are you best known for?
Made from scratch meals, incredible hospitality and beautiful scenery.
What makes your inn unique?
It has upscale quality in a remote and scenic location.
What do you love most about your inn?
The guests are really what I enjoy the most. We meet so many wonderful people from all around the world.
If someone has never been to your city, what is the #1 reason to come visit?
It’s not our city as much as it is our county. Pike County Illinois is one of the most scenic counties in the mid-west. The Mississippi river bordering it on the west side and the Illinois river on the east side makes this county very unique. Being located between the rivers provides rolling hills with scenic views. Many scenic views over the majestic rivers. Wildlife is also abundant, whitetail deer, turkey, and other wildlife are normally seen on walks along the property.
What’s the best compliment you have ever received about the inn?
That we are the finest Lodge in the in the world and the best they have ever been to!
What’s the best kept secret about the area?
Its scenic beauty. Most people don’t think of Illinois as scenic but this area between the rivers is as scenic and beautiful as anywhere in the mid-west.
If a traveler is staying at your inn for 4 nights, what should he/she do in the area?
I would recommend spending one or two days just enjoying the resort and activities we offer. Then locally antiques shopping and wineries are popular, we are within driving distance to the home of Mark Twain, Hannibal Mo - Abe Lincoln historical sites, presidential museum and library – St Louis MO that includes the arch, zoo, Cardinals, and many other attractions. There are also many neat areas to shop, enjoy wineries and other activities in-between.
Is there anything within walking distance of your inn?
The resort is 700 acres and the horseback riding, atv riding and sporting clays are all located on the property. Along with miles of hiking trails. Locations not on the property have are short drives away.
What is your favorite restaurant/food in the area?
The meals we serve at the lodge are by far the best in the area.
Any good area guides/websites that travelers could reference?
Actually there is not just one that covers everything right now but we plan in 2014 to start a new division of our web site that would feature all the popular destinations in our area.
How many rooms does your inn have?
Do you accept pets?
No. We have an outdoor kennel available or there is a place in a close by town that will keep pets.
