History comes to life in Americus and Sumter County, located in southwest Georgia. There are a number of historically significant places within this region including 2 National Historic Sites. As you drive through the National Register Historic district, enjoy the beautifully restored antebellum and Victorian houses. Stroll through Oak Grove Cemetery, the permanent resting place for Confederate soldiers who died at Andersonville. For shopping, dining or live theater at The Rylander Theatre, a restored 1920’s vaudeville treasure, visit the award-winning historic downtown district.
Located in Andersonville, Georgia, you will find Andersonville National Historic Site which is comprised of 3 parts: the most infamous Civil War Prison known as Camp Sumter which held more than 45,000 Union soldiers, of which 13,000 perished in just 14 months; Andersonville National Cemetery and the National Prisoner of War Museum. At Andersonville Civil War Village, visit the Drummer Boy Museum and attend the Andersonville Historic Fair which is held the first weekend in October.
The Jimmy Carter National Historic Site in Plains, Georgia is comprised of 3 parts: President Carter's boyhood home, in nearby Archery, which has been restored to the way it was when he lived there in 1938; the Plains High School Museum and Welcome Center; and the Plains Depot, a museum of the 1976 presidential campaign. In September, folks come from all around the globe for the annual Plains Peanut Festival celebrating “Plains, Peanuts and a President.” At Maranatha Baptist Church, attend an adult Sunday School class taught by President Jimmy Carter.
