  • History of the Inn

    Shamrock Thistle & Crown, fireplace

Pioneer Thomas Snook arrived in these parts around 1880 when he purchased 40 acres of land for $7

per acre. He may have been one of 28 residents counted in the 1880 census of Foster Park (now Weirsdale). Attracted to Florida by the flourishing citrus trade, Snook went about developing the business into a productive livelihood. At the same time he worked on his three story Victorian masterpiece which was completed in 1887. Now an historic landmark, it stood for some time as the tallest structure from Ocala to Leesburg.

The great freeze of 1895 devastated the groves for miles around and it took years to recover. But by God's grace, guava groves grew up where once many orange trees had been, providing an income (or a means to barter) until the groves were reestablished.

It would be 88 years before the groves felt the bitter sting of winter again. It came in 1983 & again in '85 & '89. The 1985 freeze was the final blow for the Snook family (then grandson John) and after more than 100 years the groves were abandoned.

This is a beautiful B&B. Very highly recommended! Brantley & Anne are wonderful hosts. We stayed in Margaret's Hideaway but got to see most all the rooms and they are all great. When they say "gourmet" breakfast they aren't kidding. We were there 3 nights and each breakfast was simply amazing. No other B&B we have stayed at has even come close. We certainly hope we can return sometime.Kurt & Tina, Houston

This is our new favorite B&B. The Cottage was everything we were looking for - and more. What a beautiful way to spend 24 hours. We'll be back. John & Donna, Boca Raton

After visiting your bed & breakfast and staying for the 3rd time in the charming quaint Victorian Cottage, it's become our home away from home. We love your "down home hospitality", Brantley, and witty jokes which you joyfully share with us and other guests at one of your famous delicious breakfasts. Looking forward to more memories with you. Bill & Betty, Pompano Beach, FL

The entire place, every room is magnificent & exquisitely designed, every square inch..the music, landscape, decor. And the breakfast was so scrumptious. Everything was just perfect. Steve & Jody, Sunrise, FL

Thank you so much for making our stay at your Bed and Breakfast so enjoyable! It's such an elegant home off the beaten path. You both were a very gracious host and hostess. Thanks for your maps and suggestions of things to do and see in your area. We enjoyed the elegant and delicious breakfasts -what a treat to have freshly squeezed orange juice each morning! We all liked having a nightly swim in your pool -very refreshing and relaxing after being out and about all day. Elisabeth liked your cats - and - the pop and Klondike Bars. We had so much fun with her - a very special time! Norm, Willa & Elisabeth(stayed in Margaret's Hideaway)
