This city made history in 1912, when a 418 pound meteorite flashed across the sky and broke into more than 16,000 pieces. The debris fell over Holbrook Arizona, earning the entity the name Holbrook meteorite. This is also the home of the famous Wig Wam Motel. What a fun experience to drive up and spend the night inside one of these cheeky little abodes, which are on the National Register of Historic Places. Holbrook is the closest city to the Petrified Forest National Park. Approx. 26 miles away, this 146 square mile park is a great spot for backpacking, photography and more. If you stop by the Historic Navajo County Courthouse you can pick up a free map of the historic walking tour of Holbrook. Some of the other sites will require some driving time, so using Holbrook as a home base makes sense. Route 66 runs thru Holbrook and you may be utilizing this highway to get to other adventures. Other sites to see are The Painted Desert, Navajo Nation, Hopi Nation, and Zuni Nation, where you will witness Native American life. This is an exciting and educational trip for young and old. A favorite dining experience of the locals is JalapeƱo Poppers restaurant. The namesake appetizer are said to be some of the lightest and best of any far and wide. So go for the grandeur of the dessert, the history and a look back in time, but when driving thru Arizona, make a stop in Holbrook. Less
