Twelfth Night Scones

Ingredients

  • 1 ¾ cups flour
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • ¼ tsp. baking soda
  • ¼ tsp. salt
  • ¼ cup butter, softened
  • ½ cup dried cranberries or cherries
  • ½ cup white vanilla chips
  • 1 tsp. orange peel
  • ½ cup vanilla yogurt
  • 1/3 cup buttermilk (or 1 tsp. of lemon juice or vinegar added to milk

Directions

Topping:

 ½ tsp. orange peel  
1-2 Tbls. Buttermilk or milk 
1 Tbls. sugar

 

Heat oven to 375 degrees.  Grease round pizza stone.  In a large bowl, stir together flour, sugar, baking powder, soda and salt.  Cut butter into mixture til it resembles coarse crumbs.  Stir in cranberries, vanilla chips, and orange peel.  Add yogurt and 1/ 3 cup buttermilk; stir just until dry ingredients are moistened.

 

Shape dough into a ball; place on stone.  With floured fingers, press dough into an 8-inch round.  Brush dough with buttermilk or milk and sprinkle the sugar/orange peel mix over top.  Bake 20-30 minutes or until edges are light golden brown.  Cool 5 minutes.  Cut into serving size pieces. Serve warm with lemon curd or berry preserves.
