Hike & Discover Bluestone State Park near Hinton

The 2,100-acre Bluestone State Park is a quiet, serene, southern West Virginia park that's closely located to your Hinton Bed and Breakfast. Bluestone State Park has many hiking trails meandering their way through and even connecting to neighboring parks. Many of the trails provide panoramic views of the rugged, hilly, terrain and Bluestone's scenic lake. The Bluestone Turnpike Trail shadows the Bluestone River to Pipestem Resort State Park. This moderately easy hike eight-mile hike along the slow moving river is an excellent way to spend a day. Several hiking trails include the Rhododendron Trail, Riverview Trail, Big Pine Trail and Boundary Trail.

Fishing is abundant in nearby Bluestone Lake and you can catch smallmouth bass, catfish, striped bass, crappie, bluegill and hybrid bass. This lake holds the state record in length for a striped bass at over 40-inches and 29.56-pounds.

You can fish, boat, water ski, swim, sunbathe or picnic on this beautiful lake adjacent to Bluestone State Park. Bluestone Lake is a 2,000-acre water playground for all. There is a marina located here offering all types of boat rentals including fishing, pontoon, paddle, rowboats and canoes. If you have your own watercraft they also have slip rentals as well as boat trailer parking. If you are interested in renting a boat, the rental office number is (304) 466-1010. The marina, dependent on conditions of the lake, is open seasonally April 15 through October 15.

Bluestone Lake also has game courts for your enjoyment. Croquet, horseshoes and shuffleboard all can be enjoyed here. Game equipment can be rented at the park office if need be. If you prefer swimming in a pool rather than the lake, there is a pool open for your enjoyment. A small fee is required for use. In addition to all the water activities there are summer nature programs and activities you can participate in. Bluestone Lake offers nature hikes, slide shows, movies, even marshmallow and wiener roasts. Inquire at the park office for what activities are taking place during you stay. Make sure to visit the gift shop to purchase unique memorabilia.


Before heading back to your Hinton Inn, there are several historical activities which take place in or around Bluestone. Enjoy the outdoor musical dramas that are held at the Grandview Park near Beckley. Consider visiting historic Hinton, the Bluestone Dam, or Sandstone Falls. Another must see is the Bluestone Wildlife Management Area, located adjacent to Bluestone State Park.
