Occoneechee State Park is located on the north side of Kerr Lake near Boydton. The park offers visitors a myriad of things to do and some of the most beautiful views of the lake. There are 18 miles of hiking trails, many of which are open to bikers and horseback riders. The interpretive trail is a self-guided jaunt that takes hikers through a terraced garden and past what was once the site of the Occoneechee plantation. There are signs along the way with information about the trail. There are three boat ramps in the area, but you must purchase a boat launch passport to use them. Fishermen enjoy the lake for its bountiful supply of large and small mouth bass, crappie, bluegill and perch. Stop in at the visitor's center near the entrance for information about the Native Americans who once lived near the lake. There are picnic shelters and an amphitheater which hosts a variety of shows and special events throughout the year.

Staunton River State Park is a 2,400 acre park at the beginning of Kerr Lake. There are many historic buildings in the park that date back to the 1930s. Many people visit the park because of its access to the lake with boat ramps, hiking trails and picnic shelters. Many people enjoy the large pool with its 70-foot waterslide. There is a smaller slide and a shallow pool for the kids. There are also tennis courts and volleyball courts near the pool. Hunting is not allowed near the park, but fishing is a popular pastime. Many areas of the park are handicap accessible. Stop in at the visitor's center for a map of the area, and enjoy your day at Staunton River State Park before heading back to your Boydton inn.

Kerr Lake is on Virginia's border south of Boydton. Just across the border lies the Kerr Lake Recreation Area. The area is easily accessible from Interstate 85 and has over 800 miles of shoreline on the lake. Those who enjoy water sports can bring their water skis, boats, canoes or kayaks and spend the day on the water. Stop in for a ranger program about the area. There is a nature trail that leads to an overlook of the lake and park. Bring your lunch and eat at one of the 300 picnic tables in the park. There are also 11 picnic shelters with running water, which are free to use. Satterwhite Point is a popular spot for swimming, with changing rooms and restrooms. No lifeguards are on duty.
