Located just north of Carthage, Defeated Creek State Park is a beautiful place to spend time when staying in a quaint Carthage Bed and Breakfast. It offers boating, fishing, swimming, a beach, picnic areas along with hiking trails and other recreational opportunities. This park is found on the Cordell Hull Dam, which is located along the Cumberland River System and offers activities year round for the whole family. Some of the most popular activities and stops in the park include the Bluegrass Festival each June, the Old Lock and Dam Number Eight and you may want to also stop by Beasley Hollow. If you are the adventurous type, you may want to try one of the many whitewater rafting opportunities nearby.

A short hour south of Carthage in McMinnville are the Cumberland Caverns, which offer plenty of activities and experiences to keep the whole group entertained for at least a good part of your vacation. This cavern is considered to be the largest show cave in the state and has activities such as field trips, an overnight spelunking tour, daytime tours and Bluegrass Underground. Bluegrass Underground offers fun in the form of a radio show in a natural amphitheater, called the Volcano Room, located deep within the cavern system. This radio show hosts everyone from small town to big name bluegrass bands, and it takes place daily at 1 p.m. Anyone is welcome and concessions are available as well as group rates.

Even closer, at just a half an hour away from any Carthage Inn is the Hurricane Hollow Apple Orchard, a beautiful spot to stop and pick apples of all kinds and varieties. The views are magnificent from the mountainside where the orchard is located, and the market is found in the hollow just at the start of the Cumberland Mountains. Apples range in variety from Gala to Fuji to Granny Smith, with just about everything in between. This spot does have a limited operating season though, as to be expected. It is usually open from August 1st to sometime in the middle of November, seven days a week.

Last but definitely not least is the Bussell Berries Farm. This delicious You-Pick Strawberry Patch allows you to pick not only their delicious ripe strawberries, but also grapes, sweet corn, blackberries, pumpkins and gourds. Cash and personal check are the only methods of payment accepted, but you can pick until you're full or take them back to your Carthage Bed and Breakfast.
