Yankton Riverboat Days are held in August of each year. This three-day event includes a quilt show, a parade, and lots of good food and music. There are competitions in wood derby races, chainsaw sculptures, arm wrestling and more. Enjoy the fireworks show at 10:00 p.m. on Friday night. Many people come out for these events, so parking is limited. There are shuttle buses to help you get back and forth between the festival and your vehicle. Local businesses sponsor the event and there are lots of giveaways and raffles to participate in. Vendors come from all over the state to offer a variety of food choices, from corn dogs to ribeye steaks. The riverboat captain and his belle always make appearances at the events. You can fill out applications online to participate in various competitions and events.

Yankton Riverboat Days is not the only festival held in August. Lewis and Clark Days are also held in the middle of the month. This festival takes visitors back to the days when Lewis and Clark traveled up the Missouri River. You will see Sioux Indians and frontiersmen in full costume with authentic firearms from the era. There are reenactments of battles and tribal meetings. This is a great way to experience and learn more about the history of the area. There are games played, food served and activities such as the cardboard races that are reminiscent of the early 1800s. Call ahead to find out exact dates of the Lewis and Clark Festival.

The Old Time Fiddle Contest and Jamboree is an annual event that is held in September. This three-day event features old-time harmonica, bluegrass and gospel music. The festival is held at the 4-H ranch off Highway 50, and kicks off with a jamboree on Friday night. Saturday is a full day with contests, entertainment, food and more. Sunday marks the end of the event with the National Invitational Finals for fiddles and a gospel music concert. There is plenty of parking at the event, and it is handicap accessible. The admission fee is $4 per session, or $12 for a weekend pass, as of 2011. Enjoy the music before heading back to your Geddes inn for the night.

During the summer at Riverside Park in downtown Yankton, you can catch weekly concerts on Tuesday nights. The concerts start at 8:00 p.m. and feature various conductors who join a band of 70 to 100 musicians to entertain the audience. There is no admission fee to the concerts.
