Niagara Attractions

When spending time at a Niagara on the Lake bed and breakfast, you will want to put aside some time to get out and see the sights and attractions. And there are a number of them, since this area is not only filled with history, but also adventure, with a capital A.

Niagara on the Lake is close to all the action and here are a few that we especially liked.

Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours

You can speed down the Niagara River gorge on a whirlpool jet boat as you learn about the waterway's history in the War of 1812. You will also get a glimpse of both Fort George and Fort Niagara on the shore way above you as well as the Whirlpool Cable Car. Some trips keep you dry, while others get you wet, so choose your poison carefully.

You will become a bird enthusiast, if you weren't one already, after a visit to the Bird Aviary where you can see over 35 species of exotic birds from around the world that made the Main Aviary their home. This aviary is styled after a rainforest, with a canopy and a jungle floors where these find feathered creatures breed and nest in tranquility. But it's not just birds you will be seeing. Reptiles rule in the Reptile Encounter Zone where you can get up close to a diverse selection of lizards, snakes, tortoise, spider and scorpions. Of course don't get too close to those reptiles that like to sting.

When staying at Ontario on the Lake b&b, be sure to take in the Maid of the Mist tour of Niagara Falls. It is one of the most majestic and thrilling tours around. You will probably choose to wear the rain coat, provided for you, so that you will not get too wet from the incredible sprays of the falls. There is nothing as dramatic as riding under the falls, so enjoy, and bring a waterproof camera.

Butterfly Conservation

Walk into their conservatory and view literally hundreds of varieties of butterflies amidst the flowers and trees and other plantings. The butterflies are drawn to colorful garb, so if you want one to alight on you, plan on wearing yellow or red. These quiet and colorful creatures are so curious about the visitors to their home, but they are definitely gentle, so not to fear. If you don't like insects however, make sure to wear dark clothing.

It doesn't matter whether it is freezing cold and snowing, at the Fallsview Indoor Water Park you can fun anytime of the year. Located across from the Canadian falls, the three-acre facility offers 16 incredible waterslides, with some almost six-stories high. This will be fun for the entire family and especially those who are young at heart. There's also a massive wave pool, and of course, places to snack or dine.
