Acting as a connector between the Cornell campus and the downtown area, the Cascadilla Creek Gorge is often called "the greenway connecting town and gown." Although right in the middle of an urban landscape, this gorge provides an oasis for those looking to get away from it all for a little while. There are lots of stairs here to assist you, and the walk lasts about 1.3 miles. It's quick, it's fairly easy and it's a great photo opportunity. The trail leading to these half dozen waterfalls starts at the park next to the University Ave./Linn St. bridge. Just keep in mind it can get a bit steep when ascending towards the college.

Enjoy a picnic on the south side of this trail, then take a hike along the one-mile-long Fall Creek gorge. You'll find six waterfalls on this scenic route, along with cascades and rapids.

This old Indian trail showcases the splendid Elizabeth Mulholland Wildflower Preserve, showcasing rich woodland flora over a three-mile trail.

Buttermilk Falls State Park features more than 500 feet of cascades and rapids as part of Buttermilk Creek. Hike to the natural pool at the base to cool off in the  swimming hole. Take a stroll upstream, along a trail that circles Lake Treman, a great foray in the nice weather. Have a picnic and visit the playground while in the area.

A short trip from Ithaca inns, in nearby Danby, the Sweedler Preserve @ Lick Brook allows visitors to walk through the surrounding forest to enjoy great views of waterfalls all along Lick Brook. Park on the roadside, and enjoy your hike on this 1.3-mile loop.

Also close to Ithaca inns is Taughannock Falls State Park, in Trumansburg. Standing three stories taller than Niagara Falls, this natural landmark features a 215-foot plunge. The surrounding rock amphitheater reaches almost 400 feet up. The park boasts a picnic area, swimming, playground and more. Top off your day with some music as part of the Summer Concert Series in the Park.
