The Shawangunk Mountains
C/o Mohonk Preserve P.O. Box 715
New Paltz, NewYork 12561
These lovely mountains are one of the most secluded spots you'll find in New Jersey and an easy day trip from Avon-by-the-Sea. Hold hands beneath azure skies by crystal clear glacial lakes, rushing waterfalls and lofty crags where the snow and ice linger into summer. Breathe in pine-scented fresh air. The Shawangunk was ranked as one of the 75 "Last Great Places in the World" by The Nature Conservancy in 1994. The mountains lure autumn foliage lovers, rock climbers, bikers and hikers from all over with their spectacular views, but you'll always find secluded spots.
The mountain range runs from the New Jersey state line north to Rosendale, New York. The Gunks, as they are called, are located six miles west of New Paltz and can be accessed only from Route 44/55. You could also go for a long romantic drive down the Shawangunk Scenic Byway. New York is 32 miles from Avon-by-the-Sea.
