Washoe Lake is a stream-fed body of water just west of Virginia City, Nevada. This shallow lake is open year round with lots of recreational opportunities including water sports, hiking and biking. This lake is just a few minutes from your Virginia City bed and breakfast.

Washoe Lake State Park is a government maintained area on the east side of the lake. It has amazing views of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. There are fees for entrance to the park, and comfort stations at different areas You can visit the wetlands, south beach, north ramp, main area and Little Washoe areas, each of which have a variety of activities to keep you busy. There are picnic shelters, grassy meadows and even a group area that can be reserved for family reunions and other special events. There are boat ramps at the main area and north ramp in the park. There are marked hiking trails and horseback riding trails available for use. You will see lots of wildlife in the park, including many species of birds. Hunting is allowed during the appropriate seasons. Fishing is also popular as the lake is stocked with bass, catfish, bullheads and Sacramento perch. This park is just down the road from your Virginia City inn.

Davis Creek Park is located on the northeast side of Washoe Lake. This park is a horseback rider's paradise. The parking lot was designed with plenty of space for parking those long horse trailers. There are also two corrals near the main entrance. The Ophir Creek Trail will take you up into the mountains on the rocky terrain that horses can easily navigate. As the elevation increases, the views of the lake and valley below are amazing. The trails are well-marked and easy to follow. There are also barbecue pits, volleyball courts and picnic areas near the trailhead.

Bowers Mansion Park is a great place to spend the day and learn more about the history of the Washoe Valley and lake area. The mansion was built in 1864 by a couple who made their millions finding gold in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. You can go on a guided tour of the mansion from Memorial Day through Labor Day and enjoy the beautiful 19th century architecture and furnishings from around the world. The grounds are beautiful, with a spring-fed swimming pool and children's wading pool for visitors to enjoy. There are also picnic areas, barbecue pits, and even a playground. There are special events throughout the year at the mansion and park areas. There is a $3 admission fee to the mansion, as of 2011.
