The park has a territory of 2,678 acres and borders the marvelous Lake Michigan. Its territory includes the scenic Fisherman's Island, but the best trails start right near the picnic area onshore. The landscape is studded with beautiful maple, birch and cedar trees. The terrain is very light and pleasant, which makes it ideal for hiking.

One of the few municipal ski facilities left in Michigan, Mount McSauba Recreation Area offers some wonderful opportunities for downhill skiing. Skiers staying at a Charlevoix Bed and Breakfast are really tempted by this spot, as it is rated as one of the best small ski areas in the whole United States. There are a total of six ski runs, suitable for both beginning and intermediate skiers. Other leisure activities that this recreation area offers are snowboarding, snowshoeing and hiking. There are ski lessons available and if you're not prepared for winter sports, you can also rent some equipment.
