The Historical Society of Glastonbury, founded in 1936, is a fascinating place to visit. It is located in a house that dates back to 1839. There are exhibits on the early Native American settlers of the area, colonial times and the revolutionary war, the Civil War period and abolitionists like the Smith sisters, the ship building era and the early 20th century. The society offers historical walking tours that culminate with dinner at a local tavern, and each year there is a tour of some of the many historical houses that the town is famous for. The museum also sponsors an annual Antiques Fair, held at the Village Green every June, and a Farm Festival that takes place in September. Be sure to call ahead for dates and times. The museum is open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., and the third Sunday of each month from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. There is an online store that sells reproductions of old maps and posters, books and curios like cast iron trivets and tea towels.

The Connecticut Audubon Center at Glastonbury opened in 1982. The 4,000 square foot facility is set on 48 acres of land and offers many programs for children, adults, biologists and environmentalists. There are exhibits on the rich wildlife that abounds along the river. There are dioramas of meadows and fields, and year-round programs. Guided nature walks, programs on medicinal plants that grow in the wild and birdwatching are also offered. There are lots of programs for the kids, like beginning birding or going stream walking to cool off. And there are advanced programs for teachers and scientists. Call for more information. The center is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. After a fun filled day enjoying the out of doors, you'll be ready to return to your Glastonbury inn.
