Summer is on its way out, which means it's the perfect time to start thinking about that winter vacation. You don't want to wait until flights become prohibitively expensive before you book your plans.

With heat waves engulfing the planet, it's hard to concentrate on November and December fun, but it's always best to plan ahead. Here are a few tips to choose the perfect winter vacation.

Decide your climate.

Winter means different things to different people. For some, they dream of a "white Christmas" (or other holiday) full of snowflakes and snowmen. For others, a winter vacation is a chance to escape the snow shovels and unpack the bikinis and swim trunks.

So the first part of planning your perfect winter vacation is to pick a climate. Do you want margaritas on the beach or hot cocoa in the cabin?

A lot of this decision will ride on your choice of activities. What sounds like the most fun for you? Skiing or surfing? Sun tan or arctic freeze?

If you're a warm climate person, you'll want to look at Florida, which boasts tourist hotspots like Orlando and Miami. If you want to snowboard, then you might want to check out Colorado or Wyoming.

Who are you traveling with?

A lot of your activities will depend on who you're traveling with, of course. So if you're planning ahead for your winter vacation, you should know who's coming with you.

The entire feel of your vacation depends on your fellow travelers.

Are you traveling with your partner and love of your life? Then romance, seclusion, and beautiful vistas may be your first choice.

Are you going with a group of friends? Then you'd better ask if they prefer ski trips and s'mores or sand and South Beach.

Are you traveling with your children? Then maybe the decision is left up to them! Better have an answer when they ask for Disney World.

Find a B&B.

Once you know where you're going and how many people are going with you, it's time to look for a place to stay.

This is a chance to make your vacation memorable. Don't book a sterile hotel. Forego the standard options.

Get the local flavor of wherever you travel and find a bed & breakfast that fits the tone of the vacation you've planned. B&Bs will give you a ground-level view of the best hidden spots as well as a good meal in the morning.

Winter is coming. And it'll be here before you know it. It's never too early to start planning, so get your vacation days ready and have a great trip.
