Introduction
The house at 35 Walnut Street (built in 1912) was purchased by Troy and Anna Brane Gillum in 1918. They were business and civic leaders during their years in Shinnston. Troy Gillum was the second Station Agent for the B & O Railroad in Shinnston. He served from 1911 until his retirement in 1957. The station was closed shortly there after.
Purchased by the Panek family in 1994.
Your host Kathleen Panek makes breads, rolls, and muffins from old family recipes, most of them adapted to very low fat or fat-free, low cholesterol for a heart healthy breakfast. Her cookbook It Isn’t In There! But It Still Tastes Great! is available in the gift shop. She makes every attempt to accommodate special diet requirements.
The aroma of fresh baked bread or rolls will welcome you to the Gillum House Bed & Breakfast.
Shinnston is located in north-central West Virginia (Mountaineer Country)
just west of I-79 halfway between Fairmont and Clarksburg.
Breakfast will be served at a mutually agreeable time in the morning. In addition to the pancakes, bread puddings, or perhaps veggie egg bake with English Muffin bread fresh from the oven as the entree, the Full Breakfast consists of fruit, juices, an assortment of teas, and freshly ground coffee (some flavored coffees are also available).
After breakfast, you may want to take a leisurely walk or bicycle ride on the West Fork River trail (approx. 50 feet from the house). This trail is part of West Virginia's Rails to Trails program that spans 16 miles from Shinnston to Fairmont.
