South Shire Inn
Relax and enjoy the romantic ambiance of days gone by in this exquisite turn-of-the-century Victorian Inn located in the heart of historic Bennington, Vermont.

The main house, formerly the private residence of Louis A. Graves, was the creation of architect, William C. Bull who designed many of the stately Victorian structures in Bennington.

Ten foot ceilings, the mahogany panelled library with ornately carved fireplace, leaded glass pocket door and bookcases and the raised plaster moldings of the Dining Room make the South Shire Inn a showpiece of the Victorian Era. Tea is served from 4 to 6 pm.

Choose from nine spacious and individually decorated guest rooms. All have private bath, air conditioning and telephone. Seven rooms have working fireplaces and the four newly renovated Carriage House rooms also have whirlpool baths. For your comfort, the South Shire Inn provides a smoke-free environment.

Explore historic Old Bennington with the Old First Church, the Old Burying Ground where Robert Frost rests, and Old Bennington's many splendid examples of Colonial architecture. Visit the Bennington Museum with its exhibits of Bennington Pottery and a gallery devoted to the work of Grandma Moses. Browse through the many antique and craft shops located nearby, or tour the countryside with its quiet charm and many covered bridges. Enjoy all Vermont has to offer the winter enthusiasts with 12 ski areas and many fine cross-country trails within an hour's drive and when touring is done, sit back and enjoy a performance by the Oldcastle Theater Company or nearby at the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the New York City Opera or the New York City Ballet Company.
