History
The Summerfield Inn has an interesting and varied history. It was built in 1921 for John L. Bradley, a partner in Miller & Bradley, lumber dealers in Abingdon. The Methodist Church purchased the home in 1927 and for the next 49 years it was used as the District Office in Southwestern Virginia as well as a Parsonage and place of residence for travelling preachers of the Methodist Church
In 1976 the property was purchased by a private owner and remained a private residence until 1986 when the Hyatt’s purchased the property for the purpose of converting it into a Bed and Breakfast Inn. The Summerfield Inn opened to the public after renovation late in 1986.
Janice and Jim Cowan purchased the Inn in 1998 and made substantial renovations and upgrades to the property. The Summerfield Inn continues the tradition of being Southwestern Virginia’s premier Bed & Breakfast Inn.
