Introduction
North Bend Plantation
A short drive west of Williamsburg and east of Richmond, along Historic Route 5 (a scenic Byway), will bring you to this 850-acre James River plantation B&B property, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Relax in the peace and quiet, hear the birds sing as you enjoy our swimming pool, game room with 1920's pool table and piano, three porches, hammock, horseshoes, volleyball, badminton, birdwatching and see the beauty of the stars at night.
Guests will enjoy full country breakfasts in the dining room, with original china and silver of this 203 year old Manor house. North Bend was built in 1801 for Sarah Harrison Minge, the sister of the 9th president, William Henry Harrison, and still owned by a descendent of the Harrison family. Breakfast consists of scrumptious homemade waffles, or an omelet and biscuits, bacon, sausage, fruit and juice.
Have a visit with your host, who is the great great grandson of Edmund Ruffen (who fired the first shot in the Civil War for the South), the great grand nephew of William Henry Harrison the 9th president, and a descendent of John Rolfe and Pocahontas. He's also your breakfast cook.
Learn about the area plantations from a Virginian whose ancestors have been here since the 1600's and include the family history of plantations previously or still owned by family members - including North Bend, Berkeley, Westover, Sherwood Forest, Shirley, Evelynton, Edgewood and Piney Grove plantations. All modern conveniences are available, including private baths, queen beds, A/C, fireplaces, rare book library, TV and robes.
There are plenty of things to do here at North Bend Plantation. The upstairs sun porch provides a beautiful vista of fields, horses, sheep and wild game. A billiard room is available for the pleasure of our guests. The billiard table has a marble base and was bought in 1914 by the present owner's grandfather. Croquet, horseshoes, volleyball, and a swimming pool are on site, with a public golf course 20 minutes away. A park with a fishing pier and nature trails is only 3 miles away.
