The house was designed by famous architect Peter Harrison in 1756; since the original house was destroyed on its 200th birthday, this one is actually a copy built in 1987. The exterior is made of wood carved to look like cut stone, a technique invented by Harrison in 1742 for a client who was unable to afford a stone house! The interior is furnished to museum standards completely in the period, using reproductions and English and American antiques. The two rental bedrooms (all that is permitted by local law) are large rooms, each containing an extra-long queen-size four-poster canopy bed plus a twin four-poster canopy bed, as well as other period furniture. One room is decorated in furnishings and colors from colonial Philadelphia and the other from colonial New England. Each has a private bathroom (shower, not tub). Even the blankets are historically authentic. Each room is, of course, air conditioned. Breakfast in the morning is in the formal dining room, and usually includes historic colonial recipes, often accompanied by an interesting seminar on historical topics led by your host.
Every Tuesday evening, year round, people assemble in our ballroom from 8 to 10 to dance the dances of the colonial period (in modern casual clothes), known as "English Country Dancing." Beginners are welcome, and many of our guests either watch or take part, some becoming so enthusiastic that they join Country Dance groups in their home areas.
Cathy is a Registered Nurse, an avid gardener, beekeeper, mother, and maker of colonial clothing (we can help you rent colonial clothing for your stay in Williamsburg or simply to go out to dinner in the historic taverns). John is an author of historical books and former museum director.
