Mayhurst Welcomes you!
We invite you to relax and get warm next to one of our 11 Fireplaces. Enjoy the grandeur of the past when life was slower and more gracious. This marvelously restored plantation home of 1859 can transport you to a romantic time far away from today's stresses.
Mayhurst is a magnificent and rare Italianate Victorian gem; remarkable for its fanciful exuberant architecture and oval-spiral staircase ascending four floors. It is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places and a Virginia Historic Landmark for its historic as well as architectural merit. Mayhurst is also one of the historical properties on the "Journey Through Hallowed Ground" - the Historical Route 15 and Route 20 corridor of that runs from Gettysburg to Monticello.
You may wish to tour all four floors of the 9200 Sq. Ft. Mansion complete with a climb up the very unique spiral staircase to the cupola where General "Stonewall" Jackson observed his troops. Imagine the bustling 2800 acre plantation of 1860, as you wander into the summer kitchen and smokehouse, past the schoolhouse for the children of the plantation, then continue touring 37 acres with 200 year old trees to the pond and spring house. You are walking where Confederate troops pitched their tents during the winter of 1863-64 protecting the mansion which served as headquarters of the Army of Northern Virginia's III Corps. General A.P. Hill commanded over 18,000 troops from a tent on the front lawn. General Robert E. Lee and "Stonewall" Jackson were also guests.
Mayhurst is now outstandingly restored with the best of the antebellum era and 21st century comforts: Our eight stately guest rooms have private baths, double whirlpool tubs, original Italian marble fireplaces, luxury linens, antiques, period decor, Central Air and Heat and High Speed WiFi. Snacks, soft drinks, wine and cheese are served each evening from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM. Three course full plantation style breakfasts are served on the large patio or in the dining room next to the fireplace. Mayhurst is also a Virginia Green Lodging B&B - see Innformation for details.
Mayhurst is surrounded with Art Studios, Antique Shops, Presidential Mansions (Montpelier, Monticello, Ashlawn) an incredible array of fine restaurants, several Golf Courses, eight exceptional Virginia Wineries, and multiple Civil War Battlefields. A wonderful article about lodging in Maryland and Virginia that declares Mayhurst a "Victorian Beauty" .... "warmed by ornate cornices, arched windows, and a carved cupola..." and that provides a unique atmosphere for guests because Mayhurst has, "A dozen working fireplaces that still warm the parlors and guest rooms...."

Mort Kunstler Paints a scene depicting a Civil War event at Mayhurst:
During the Confederate winter encampment of 1863-64, Mayhurst serverd as General A. P. Hill's Headquarters. One of A. P. Hill's daughters, Lucy Lee Hill, was baptized at Mayhurst. Her Godfather, General Robert E. Lee, held her in his arms throughout the christening ceremony on May 1, 1864. The image of the christening scene was recently completed by renowned historical artist, Mort Kuntsler, in a painting entitled "Tender is the Heart". A Giclee Print of the scene hangs in the Mayhurst Parlor where the ceremony took place. The painting was released in a special ceremony and signing at Mayhurst on 27 April, 2007.
