Things To Do
Chincoteague Wild Ponies
Assateague Island is home of the world famous "Chincoteague Wild Ponies". These herds are the descendants of ones that grazed on the island as early as the 17th century. The herds are separated at the Virginia and Maryland state line. The Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company maintains the Virginia herd while the Maryland herd is managed by the National Park Service. The wild ponies can be seen from several nature trails on Assateague Island.
