The Legend
Prior to the Civil War, two young gentlemen on Chincoteague Island pooled their resources and built a large "T"-shaped house on Main Street in the bustling sea village. One was Dr. Nathaniel Smith, who treated Union troops here during the war, and the other was Joseph Kenny, who served the Island as Postmaster.
One day a young lady came to visit from Baltimore, and in due course Joseph fell in love. He soon married the love of his life, Sarah. Her sister, Juliet, came for the wedding, and cupid struck again. Nathaniel stunned by Juliet's beauty, soon proposed and later married her. However, the sisters soon found that, as much as they cared for each other, they did not enjoy living under the same roof! To save their friendship-and their marriages-the gentlemen opted to split the house.
After 150 years, the two houses come together again, connected with a large Garden Room, continuing the romance of this bygone era. Today this home stands as a historical marker to the romance of Chincoteague Island as a very unique Bed and Breakfast, the 1848 Island Manor House!
