Follow a healthy, hearty gourmet breakfast with a game of horseshoes, a nature trail walk or a visit to the vineyard. Relish delicious candelit dinners. Take seasonal strolls in award-winning gardens; enjoy water sports on the James River; drive along the unforgettable Blue Ridge Parkway or read in the family swing on the front porch before retiring to your distinctive room to plan your next day's excursions. Come and see why Thomas Jefferson chose this beautiful part of Virginia for his own legendary home!

One hundred years after the settlement of Scottsville, Virginia, surveyor Peter White (in 1832) built the Federalist portion of High Meadows Vineyard Inn. Fifty years later (in 1882) businessman Charles Harris created the Victorian portion of the Inn. In the years that followed, the Harris family was raised, and other Virginia families took their turns farming the land. The house, however, fell into great disrepair, and it was our good fortune that in 1984 Peter Sushka, his wife Jae, and their son Kevin saw High Meadows for the first time - and saw also what a beauty the house could be again.

In 1985 Peter Sushka and Jae Abbitt, two modern day lovers of history, fine food, and nature planted a viniferous vineyard and commenced restoration of High Meadows as Country Inn. Peter & Jae were early vigorous supporters of Central Virginia wineries, and were named the 1998 Virginia Wine Restaurant of the Year. They were joined in the year 2000 by two energetic musicians, Jon Storey and Rose Farber. As Peter & Jae stepped back from the daily workings of the inn, Jon & Rose continued the elegant dining tradition, and planned many, many vinter dinners over the course of their time at High Meadows.

The Inn was put up for sale in spring of 2006, and, finding no one yet to take over the reins, closed October 31, 2006. It was over that fall and winter that the current owners, Nancy Bruce & her daughter Cynthia, saw and fell in love with High Meadows. And so begins a new chapter in the history of this wonderful place. Fresh new colors both inside and out, the rooms made just a bit more comfortable by today's standards yet still furnished lovingly with many period antiques, new Italian linens, and a renewed vision of the gardens. The breakfasts are scrumptious, the beds are inviting, and the atmosphere is at once cheerful and fun, yet blissfully quiet and relaxing. You can mingle if you like, or find a quiet corner to just sit and enjoy the birdsongs....something most of us long to do, but never take the time to do!

Few Virginia Historic Landmarks are also full-service country inns. As one of these, High Meadows offers you the same richness of Federalist feeling and frivolity of Victoriana you would enjoy by touring companion historic landmarks such as Virginia's Mt. Vernon, Montpelier, or Ashlawn. Yet, High Meadows allows you an opportunity to both lodge in and dine at one of the area's finest country inns. As Virginia's only Inn that combines its place on the National Register of Historic Homes with a renaissance farm vineyard (leading producer of Pinot Noir grape), High Meadows offers the discriminating guest a rare opportunity to look at both 170 years of architectural history and new, exciting years of viticultural happenings. High Meadows Vineyard Inn boasts its very own signature Pinot Noir, made by the exceptionally talented Gabriele Rausse. Gabriele is a Virginia Wine Maker of the Year, is a consultant to several other major local vineyards, and bottles under the Gabriele Rausse label.
