Virginia is the home of many important dates and places in American history. The first English settlement in the New World was Jamestown and it also became the first capital of Virginia. At St. John's Church in Richmond, Virgina, Patrick Henry made his famous "Give me Liberty or Give me Death" speech. Virginia was also the site of two surrenders; the British surrender ending the American Revolutionary War at Yorktown and the end of the American Civil War at Appomattox. Beautiful Virginia is part of the Atlantic Flyway, a route for birds migrating along the Atlantic coast, and provides important resting and feeding grounds. At one time tobacco was Virginia's sole economic crop. An engineering wonder can be found in the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, the world's largest bridge-tunnel complex.
