In 1833 Worcester Harrison, a Yankee clockmaker from New York, set eyes on the bluffs and hills and valleys, the stream, and the wooded lands that came to be known as the Little City of Seven Hills, Wisconsin. The official name of the original settlement was Wisconsin City but the name was changed in 1837 to Sauk Washington and in 1844 to Port Washington, Wisconsin because of its increasing importance as a Lake Michigan port. The building of a pier had greatly facilitated loading and unloading of cargo and passengers. The population of Port Washington more than doubled between 1892 and 1903 when the Port Washington Inn was built by George and Eva Blessing, owners of the Port Brewing Company, brewers and bottlers of Premo, the beer that made Milwaukee furious!

No doubt the Blessings had chosen the location for their new home on Sweetcake Hill to take advantage of the harbor views it would afford. Their home was designed with large bayed windows and a balcony and front porch taking full advantage of these views. Historically a fishing community, it is appropriate that charter fishing continues to be a big industry in Port Washington. Sailors also use the marina and welcome its easy access to the town. Many enhancements were made to the marina in the 1990's, making it a more popular place for residents and visitors to stroll and picnic.

Tall Ships are welcomed into Port's harbor, a reminder of days gone by when shipping vessels arriving in the port numbered in the hundreds. Lake Michigan's penchant for fast brewing storms has led to tales of shipwrecks along these shores, many of them chronicled by Richard Smith and available at our Milwaukee Bed and Breakfast. The area surrounding our Milwaukee bed breakfast has a history as rich and inviting as the land itself. Our Cedarburg bed and breakfast is close to many enjoyable attractions.

Visiting Port Washington today is an experience for the senses. It is visually picturesque, tranquil in pace, abundant in eateries, and friendly in nature. In fact, many people who visit fall in love with the City of Seven Hills! Take a walk, enjoy our parks and marina, ride the bike trail, linger in our Wisconsin coffee shops and restaurants, visit our antique and specialty shops. Port Washington is a world apart from the hustle and bustle. So come visit our Port Washington Bed Breakfast.
