Friday Harbor, located on San Juan Island in the Pacific Northwest, is a picture-perfect historic seaport surrounded by spectacular mountain and marine views. With a natural grandeur that combines salty breezes, vibrant blue water, pebbled beaches and fragrant woods, it is a rare, unspoiled retreat ideal for outdoor adventurers, wildlife enthusiasts and history buffs alike.
Friday Harbor, an antidote to city life, is a small, well-preserved community tucked between Seattle, Vancouver BC and Victoria BC. It's a year-round destination, accessible only by ferry or seaplane, where visitors can easily get around on foot to indulge in the eclectic collection of art galleries, coffeehouses, boutiques and eateries. Nestled in the center of a "rain shadow" cast by the mountains on the Olympic Peninsula, Friday Harbor enjoys nearly 250 days of sunshine each year and only half the annual rainfall of nearby Seattle, making it a place where kayaking, biking and walking are as common as driving.
Though only one square mile in size, Friday Harbor boasts nearly 150 historic buildings reflecting the community's civic, commercial and residential history. Friday Harbor has been selected as a 2008 Dozen Distinctive Destination by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Friday Harbor is one of Washington's few seaport villages to survive the turn-of-the-century fires that engulfed early Seattle and other cities. Its authentic downtown streetscape and postage-size Memorial Park are the gateway to discovering the rich history, rural character and pristine marine environment of the San Juan archipelago.

Travelers are always looking for memorable and relaxing experiences. Let’s discover more through the words of our innkeepers. Many thanks to Anna Marie & David for sharing their own secrets with BBOnline.com! Why do most travelers stay at your inn?
Most travelers stay with us because of our reputation for serving a fabulous 3 course service breakfast, our friendly island hospitality and service and due to our ideal location – convenient to the ferry landing and down town Friday Harbor but tucked in a quiet residential setting. To put it in perspective, the island or actual the county which includes all 170 islands that are part of the archipelago does not have a single traffic light!
What are you best known for? What makes your inn unique? What do you love most about your inn?
We are known for our breakfasts. We prepare everything from scratch daily using ingredients from local island farms. We are unique in that we have guest rooms, suites and cottages so we can cater to couples on a romantic getaway, families traveling with small children and pets! Between the Harrison House and our neighbor property the Tucker House, we have 17 units which at maximum occupancy can accommodate 70 guests – perfect for family reunions, corporate retreats, and weddings.
If someone has never been to your city, what is the #1 reason to come visit?
The number one reason folks visit Friday Harbor, San Juan island is to see Orcas whales in the wild. We are the islands where Blackfish was filmed!
What’s the best compliment you have ever received about the inn?
The best compliment that we received is when gets stay with us year after year since they feel right at home and comfortable and then they refer us to their friends and family.
What’s the best kept secret about the area?
The San Juan Islands are the jewel of the pacific northwest. We are a short day trip from Seattle but when you arrive via a 70 minute ferry you feel that you traveled some place really far away. Friday Harbor is an authentic working sea side village with most of it original historic buildings. Our community treasures values of a small town with a neighborly friendly feel.
If a traveler is staying at your inn for 4 nights, what should he/she do in the area?
If a visitor is here for 4 nights, they should not only visit the 2 national park sites on San Juan Island, lavender farm, outdoor sculpture museum and winery, they should also enjoy a whale and wild life adventure and a kayaking day trip. Then for their last two days, I would send them via the interisland ferry to enjoy Washington’s state only water scenic byway to visit Orcas and Lopez, our two neighbor islands to the east. Each island has a very different personality and geography.
Is there anything within walking distance of your inn?
The Inn is conveniently located a few steps from the ferry landing and the historic walkable sea side town of Friday Harbor where guests can shop, dine or catch an adventure tour for kayaking, whale watching or zip lining.
What is your favorite restaurant/food in the area?
I must recommend Coho Restaurant, affiliated with the Inns. It is located a block from the Inns and is housed in a small historic house. The intimate setting with only 9 tables is perfect for a special celebration or a night out with friends. Coho serves pacific northwest cuisine with a Mediterranean flair.
Any good area guides/websites that travelers could reference?
The Inn’s website is a huge resource of activities to do when visiting whether guests are here for 1 day or a month. The San Juan Island Visitors Bureau is the official DMO for the San Juan Islands. Visitsanjuans.com
How many rooms does your inn have?
We have 6 suites, and our neighbor property, the Tucker House has 11. We run them as one large inn. We have left each historic Inn branded individually since they had been separate properties with different ownership for many years.
Do you accept pets?
Yes we accept pets. They receive their own pup cake when they check in and then the Inn’s specially made dog biscuits when they check in. Dogs get their own hand painted towel and dog bowl upon check in great for wiping wet feet after a day of island exploration.
