Honey Recipes

After reading the New York Times article about how bad sugar is for you to say nothing about High Fructose Corn Syrup I dug out my 1992 Honey cookbook:

Here is a sample with changes of course!
Honey Nut Bread
Combine - 1 cup honey, 1 cup milk and 1/4 cup butter in a saucepan to dissolve sugar and butter.
Cool and pour into a large bowl.
Sift together 2 1/2 cups flour, 2 teaspoons of cinnamon, 1 teaspoon nutmeg, 1 teaspoon baking soda and 1/2 teaspoon salt.  Add wet to dry and fold in 3/4 cup chopped walnuts and 1/2 cup currants* (or another dried fruit or different nut).  Let stand for 20 minutes and then bake in 2 small loaf pans for 40-50 mins.
*I really like currants better than raisins as they don't drag the mix down and end on the bottom.  Plump them in a jar with sherry.

A new restaurant and other things 12 Mar 2011, 4:39 am

With my ear to the ground I hear that the Dining Room of old is re-opening - will it be Moroccan food? No word on that yet.  Such a nice space, I look forward to its return.
Woodrow Wilson is offering their Flapper evening on March 25th and it looks to be a fun evening.  Wear feathers. Call (540) 885-0897 ext. 106 to make reservations for this event. $85 includes heavy hors d's and open bar.
St. Patrick's day will come and go this coming week, not marked especially despite the Scots-Irish hangover from the past.  The Irish Alley is so named for its location, not for being Irish.
Last but not least, the tulips are up!

American Shakespeare Center lights up for 2011 14 Jan 2011, 11:55 am

American Shakespeare Center starts their 2011 schedule TODAY!  The Comedy of Errors, The Malcontent and in February Look about you make up their first 3 offerings. The Malcontent is written by John Marston around the same time (1599) that Shakespeare wrote and I am disappointed that AMC did not put on "The Dutch Courtesan" by Marston as that sounds like a lot of fun - described as a satire on lust and hypocrisy! Look about you is by Anonymous and I am guessing that some of the local troups of actors wrote it - complete with Robin Hood and Henry II. Their schedule of performances is from Thursday-Sunday and if you come on Juliette's special Thursdays you can get 2 tickets to the play and one night's stay for $179.00.  Call me today! 540-885-8885.
