Visit a Landmark Virginia Bed and Breakfast Inn
An avenue of towering red maples serves as your welcoming committee at the North River Inn, located in beautiful Gloucester, Virginia. Standing tall and stately, these silent sentinels guide you up the lane to the place you'll call home during your stay. The North River Inn is the essence of a wonderful Virginia getaway.
Surrounded on three sides by salt water, the North River Inn sits majestically on 100 acres of Virginia countryside in the historic Tidewater region off the Chesapeake Bay.
Out here, where the land meets the water and the present meets the past, you'll have a rare glimpse of life as it once was in rural Virginia . . . unhurried, gracious, and breathtakingly beautiful.

Established as the 17th century estate of sea captain Thomas Todd, these broad fields stretching down to the tidal river have been farmed for more than 350 years, and have earned the designation Centennial Farm by the Virginia Department of Agriculture. Toddsbury, the original home on the property, is a National Register and Virginia Historic Landmark house, which today serves as the private home of the Montague family who own and operate the Inn.

At the North River, we take our breakfasts seriously. On the weekends, enjoy a generous, hot breakfast prepared and served family-style by the Inn's professional chef , Marjorie Hayes, at Creek House. Our menu ranges from a variety of egg dishes, both Southern and international in flavor (made from our free-range hens' eggs), as well as homemade pancakes and waffles, served with sweet or savory toppings. Southern grits, enriched with sharp cheeses and herbs from our gardens, often make an appearance on our table. Our breakfast meats - thick, Virginia bacon and sausage - are prepared and served separately from our other dishes. We begin breakfast with fruits in season, muffins, and end with fresh pastries. And we always have plenty of hot coffee or freshly brewed tea.
During the week, enjoy a different kind of breakfast: a "self-catered" full continental meal, eaten in the privacy of your own building, of fresh bread, pastries, fruit, cereal, milk, juice, coffee, and tea.Your Personal ChefWe are pleased to offer the personal chef services of locally renowned professional cook, Marjorie Hayes. Ms. Hayes is much-loved by our guests, many of whom return especially to enjoy the breakfasts she has prepared here since our opening in 1999. Her excellent meals at North River have been recognized in national publications, and she owns an enthusiastic following in our region for her deep culinary experience and creative cooking: always delicious, beautifully presented meals, ranging from traditional southern cuisine to adventuresome new tastes.Incorporating locally sourced ingredients whenever possible, Mrs. Hayes creates menus that blend sophistication with downright good food. Fresh herbs and greens from our North River gardens, eggs from our free-range hens, and apples, pears and figs from our orchard all make appearances alongside locally grown poultry, pork and beef – and, of course, oysters and crabs! Would you like to have herb-crusted rack of lamb, roasted cumin potatoes and our arugula and baby salad greens with mustard dressing, served to you by candlelight in the formal dining room of Creek House? Follow your dinner with honey-rye cakes and port by the fire. Or would you and your group of vacationing friends enjoy a brunch in the sunny breakfast room, with an asparagus and arugula frittata, Asiago cheese grits, fruit parfaits and rosemary scones? We invite you to work with Ms. Hayes to create meals that suit your appetite and pocketbook; we can provide sample menus, offering brunch, box lunches and dinner choices. Dinners start at $75/person for four*. Breakfast and brunch start at $25.00/person for four; costs for two people are slightly higher.* for a meal based around chicken or vegetarian options; other meat, seafood and game will cost more. Alcohol must be purchased and provided by guest.
