  • Introduction

Cooper's Landing Inn and Traveler's Tavern is a small bed and breakfast, restaurant, and catering team located in Clarksville, Virginia on Buggs Island Lake. Whether you want to have a romantic dinner in a quaint historic setting, host your wedding at our beautiful gazebo, or have us cater your event off-site, we hope you will choose Cooper's Landing Inn & Traveler's Tavern.

Cooper's Landing Inn is a part of Virginia's only lakeside town. Originally built in 1830, the home is surrounded by beautiful grounds and original outbuildings, including a working smokehouse which houses a hot tub for Bed & Breakfast guests.

Boasting the recent addition of a 20' by 40' inground pool, Cooper's Landing Inn provides guests with a cool retreat during summer months. Surrounded by a brick patio, the pool area is complete with bistro tables and loungers where guests can savor a frozen cocktail or indulge with an item off our delicious pool menu.

Because Cooper's Landing is truly a Romantic Getaway in Lake Country, many guests never leave the inn and enjoy a romantic small town escape and INNdulgences such as in-room massage, chocolate covered strawberries, and a glass of wine by the fire in winter or in the hammock during spring. Whatever your pleasure, Cooper's Landing Inn will make it memorable!

Our guests can enjoy an afternoon cocktail upon arrival and are always served a full course breakfast served either to their bedroom door, taken in our beautiful sunroom, or formal dining room.

Beverages and snacks are always available to our guests on our butler's pantry 24 hours a day including coffee, dessert wines or sherry, herbal tea, soda, bottled water, granola, biscotti, fresh fruit, and seasonal delicacies.

Guests are always welcome to enjoy a drink next to the original woodstove in our tavern anytime during their stay in the winter months, and in the summer sit under a mighty oak tree or relax on the front porch. We offer featured red and white wines, specialty cocktails, imported beers, and seasonal specialties like hot toddies in the winter and fresh mango margaritas in the summer months. Guests are also encouraged to slip out back and enjoy Cooper Springs, our 60 jet, 16 person hot tub which is enclosed in the original smokehouse where guests can dim the chandelier lights and gaze at the stars through the skylight.

In the summer months, the mood lighting of the pool surrounded by oaks wrapped in twinkling lights will call you to take an evening dip or you can sunbath during the day while enjoying a margarita or meal off our pool menu.

    "Dear Les and Nichol,
As we shared with you in person, our stay at your wonderful Inn was just perfect. We could not have picked a better place to celebrate our 44th anniversary. From the moment we arrived, we were treated with true Southern hospitality and it continued through our entire stay. Our dinners were beyond compare and our breakfasts on the patio were enchanting. Our room was the perfect setting for celebrating our anniversary. ! The attention you both have given to your guests accommodations will be rewarded because "word of mouth" is the best advertising. We wish you all the best as you continue with your dream."
    Grover & Paige Lilley

"This place was amazing, a diamond in the rough.  This was our first stay at a B&B and after staying here, I don’t think we could ever stay anywhere else.  Cut off from the world and completely pampered!  What a great vacation! Oh, and not to forget the best food we have ever eaten.

Oh my god he is a great chef!  Hopefully one day they will come out with a cookbook with his wonderful recipes.  Heck, I would buy 2!!!  Loved it here, and we will definitely be back!"
    Melanie and Marty Benson

"What a great stay, as always!  This is our 3rd trip to Cooper’s and we absolutely love it every time and look forward to our next time back!  The new room is beautiful, but of course we expected nothing less. You guys have fabulous taste!  And speaking of taste, the food…oh my, oh my! We are expecting our first child this summer and you certainly now how to please a pregnant lady’s palate! Thanks again for a fabulous, romantic stay."
    Trip and Andrea Emerson

    Bill and Connie Berndt

"This was our first visit to your inn and it was exactly what we needed.  Everything was so great- We love the ambiance of the room, the wine, chocolate covered strawberries, beautiful roses, and fireplace made our stay that much better!  The food was delicious and the carriage ride suggestion was perfect.  We had an amazing and lovely get-away thanks to all of you!!  We will definitely be back… and recommending Cooper’s Landing to our friends!"
    The Rumbaugh’s

"This is our third time coming back to our favorite getaway!  (since a little over a year ago.)  We have stayed in the Vineyard Suite, Romeo and Juliet, and this lovely Sage room so far.  And we love them all!  It is so relaxing and refreshing here.  The weather was beautiful during our stay.  We even went for a dip in the pool for the first time.  Everything is so perfect here.  Our utopia! We definitely enjoyed the size of this room, and the many windows.  Our dog Cody has come with us every time so far- and he loves it here too!  Next time we come, we will have another addition to our family traveling with us! A baby boy! (who will be joining us very soon)  We always brag about this place to everyone we know.  Everyone should know about it! As always, food was lovely, service was exceptional, and the atmosphere was charming!"
    Michael and Christy

"My sister and I really enjoyed our overnight stay here.  This is a beautiful place.  The food was great, the weather was great.  Nichol, you couldn’t have been more friendly or accommodating. I truly believe this has been the best B&B I’ve every stayed at."
    Merry Woods and Pam Melech

"Thank you so very much for a wonderfully romantic weekend.  Your attention to detail has made this time an unforgettable experience- every room is so beautiful and so romantic.  The food was absolutely delicious and we enjoyed every bite.  Your friendliness and hospitality made us feel so loved and welcomed.  The bedroom was so romantic and we enjoyed every part of it, the fireplace, tub, etc.  My husband did a wonderful job planning this weekend here with you all.  We look forward to coming again.  May God richly and abundantly pour our blessings on you both and much success."
    Scott and Connie

"You have created such luxurious, comfortable, and relaxing rooms.  Thank you for sharing your home with us.  Your attention to detail is divine- from the sensual bedding to the scented bath salts, to the heated shower room.  We feel so pampered and indulged.  The food, of course, was scrumptious and what a treat to have it delivered to our room- we will be back!"
    Sandi and Wade

"I knew we were going to enjoy our stay from our first phone conversation.  You were so friendly and then to find out I work with your cousin!  Our room was great and the bed was perfect- we slept like big, ole babies.  The only problem is I just have to go home, knock out a wall and put in a claw foot tub by tonight. That was heaven!"

"We just stayed at an inn featured in Southern Living a few months ago, and your dinner beat them out in our book.  The green beans were exceptional.  Thanks for a quiet, relaxing 50th birthday celebration that I won’t soon forget.  We will pass your name on to our friends."
    The Millers

"What a lovely way to spend our 16th wedding anniversary!  Four nights of bliss!  You have everything we could want right here.  The meals were 5 star, outstanding, amazing…The ostrich was my favorite-ha! The beauty of this weekend has been the ability to sleep the weekend away and rejuvenate.  We feel fresh and nurtured.  It’s great to see and feel the presence of the two of you and how you enjoy what you’re doing.  You have a great staff too.  We have been very well taken care of.  We’re already looking forward to coming back!  Thank you for doing all in your power to provide the perfect weekend experience for us. You’re the best!
    Carla and Dusty

"This has been the most romantic, relaxing weekend we have ever spent together.  The boat trip was wonderful, the wine and cheese and fruit was delicious; weather just perfect.  Horseback riding was loads of fun…and Van’s was spectacular! (I did go in the house---I’ve never seen anything like it.)  Les is a great cook…our meals were soooo good! This place is wonderful. We will be back next year."
    Bobby and Sally

"Thank you so much for making our 1 year wedding anniversary wonderful.  We truly enjoyed our stay in the Romeo and Juliet.  Your staff is out of this world and the food was outstanding.  We also have never had such a good  nights rest.  Once again thank you for the wonderful stay and we hope to be able to return soon."

    Megan and Jon 07

"p.s. The breakfast served “at your door” was PERFECT!"

"They say that the way you spend New Year’s Day is the way you’ll spend the rest of the year.  If that is true,  then we should be well fed, bathed in luxury, and filled with holiday spirit(s).  You have created a little fantasy world here where people can come and have a unique experience, the kind people often dream about, but rarely have.  Thank you for the gracious hospitality, the beautiful atmosphere, the elegant dining, the gourmet appetizers and meals, the blending of old and new, and memorable celebration of the new year.  I certainly hope that the rest of 2008 is as wonderful as day 1."
    John and Jan ‘08

"'to be, or not to be…that is the question.'  How could we not quote Shakespeare?  To be…that is what, perhaps, our lives meant to live and love are about.

Simply…to be…in this fine place at this unexpected time-  this is what all the life, the work, the love, giving and earning is for- to just be.

What did we to this weekend?  Our getaway to celebrate our second anniversary?  NOTHING…!!!

    Music on the patio…cheese plate…iced wine…sleeping late…scrumptious breakfast…morning nap…stroll through Clarksville…picnic on a quiet point on the lake…afternoon nap in the sun… luxurious bath…peaceful dinner…delectable dessert…strong coffee…music…movie…

Thank you, Les and Nichol, for creating a haven for us to simply BE.

All our best for peace and prosperity for many more years!"
    The Jonas’ ‘08

"My husband planned this surprise getaway and gave me clues as to where we were going leading up to our trip for our 23rd anniversary!  I was thrilled to see all that you offered when viewing your site on the internet, but wow…nothing is like experiencing the extravagance of your Inn!

The Romeo and Juliet suite is beautifully decorated- we love every nuance of the room!  The food was better than any we’ve had at any other B&B or restaurant! Unbelievable!

We enjoyed lounging at the pool and just relaxing.  Thanks for your wonderful hospitality, going the extra mile to make our stay perfect!"
    The Wolfs ‘08

"This is our second time staying here at Cooper’s Landing.  We absolutely love it here, and we will certainly be back.  We rave about this place to everyone we know.  It was wonderful to come down to visit in the winter time because the weather is a lot nicer here than it is at home.  We love the rooms, the food (A+++), the extras, and even the town.  We are especially grateful that this is a pet friendly establishment, so our boy Cody can relax with us.  Our goal is to stay in every room here, over time.  Last time we came, in April last year, we stayed for two nights; this time we stayed three.  I would not be surprised if we made it four next time!  We have never had a bad moment here- pure pleasure.  Stress-free.  Perfect.  Thanks again for making our get-away the most wonderful experience we could imagine."
    Christy and Michael ‘09

"p.s. The staff is also very polite, inviting, and accommodating!!"

"This is our five year anniversary and we wanted to get away.  This past year has been very stressful so we really needed some us time.  It was wonderful being able to eat a fabulous anniversary dinner and come right back upstairs to a fabulous room.  The next morning- we woke up to breakfast in bed.  This is awesome and the food is out of this world.  We will tell every couple we know about this place.  This was so great- the only time this weekend we left was for our picnic lunch and some shopping.  How awesome is that, breakfast in bed, dinner in bed. We had such  wonderful anniversary- thank you for making our anniversary much more memorable and wonderful! We’ll be back!"
    Jon and Katie ‘09

"Absolutely beautiful room and Bed and Breakfast.  This was a great treat for our 1st anniversary.  Very accommodating and inviting- please thank your chef for creating a special meal due to Brian’s allergies it was delicious!  This is the 2nd B&B we’ve been to and we cannot decide between the two there are so many great qualities of each one… I love the shower and the separate staircase… it made me feel like a princess!  We are even looking at a fireplace for our house . . . we will definitely refer our friends and family to your inn!"
    Brian and Jessica ‘07

"This is our second stay at Cooper’s Landing and we are still severely pleased!  The Vineyard room is absolutely beautiful and we love how private it feels.  The deep purple walls and the cold & purple fabric are inviting, rich, and warm.  We love the continued additions to the inn and can’t wait to see what’s to come in the future.  The staff, as always are welcoming and friendly.  We had a very memorable birthday weekend!

Cooper’s Landing truly is one of Virginia’s best kept secret.  The themed rooms offer a romantic feel and the food continues to hold high standards and an explosion of taste.

Thank you for making our stay so lovely. We look forward to our next stay."
    Star and Mike, ‘08

"This is our first vacation since our honeymoon three years ago.  After forgetting our anniversary last year.  We decided that we should take some time for ourselves this year.  I found Cooper’s Landing online and it sounded almost too good to be true!  A hot tub, swimming pool, great food, and privacy?!  Well, it’s true.  We could not have asked for more.  The past two days have been a wonderful break from our daily lives and a chance to reconnect.  Josh and I have decided to make these short getaways a regular occurrence.  It is so stressful raising a special needs kid and we often forget to take care of ourselves.  Cooper’s Landing has helped to remind us that it is okay to relax and recharge.  Thank you so much for making our stay the best.  We will be back!"

    • There are hooks to hang your clothes and robes behind the door. We know you may not want to walk through the dining area in your suit or robe, so you may also change in the enclosed smokehouse which is very private.
    • There is a chandelier with a dimmer switch on the wall on the right of the hot tub as well as candles to light the area. Please extinguish all candles after use.
    • Operating the tub is quite easy. There are two buttons for jets and one button for a blue mood light. Please turn off after use. Please replace Hot Tub Cover after use.

    23. Staunton River State Park takes its name from the river that borders the park, named for Captain Henry Staunton who, before the Revolutionary War, commanded a company of soldiers to protect early settlers from Indian attacks. This section of the Dan River became known as Captain Staunton's River and later, Staunton River. Forty years later, when the river became an important means of transporting tobacco, many large plantations were built in the area, most of which were destroyed during the Civil War. From 1933 to 1935, a unit of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) built most of the buildings and facilities that are still seen today at the park. Nearby Buggs Island Lake was formed with the construction of the Kerr Dam in 1952. Various interpretive programs available.

In addition to the 425 seat theater, with performances of every kind, the welcome center includes exhibits highlighting Halifax County's tobacco and river transportation heritage. A new exhibit, "The Crossing of the Dan" traces the route of Lord Cornwallis in 1781, as he led British troops from Guilford Courthouse, North Carolina, to the Dan River, in Virginia, pursuing General Nathaniel Greene and the Americans. The journey ultimately ended at Yorktown with Cornwallis' surrender and the official end to fighting in the American Revolution. The name of the building comes from the process of tobacco being pressed - or "prized" - into the hogsheads for shipment.

    26. Berry Hill Plantation. Marveling at one of the finest examples of Greek Revival architecture in Virginia as you travel up the tree-lined drive, you'd almost expect Scarlett to slip through the massive columns and glide down the stairs to meet you. Built in 1842, this eight-columned home is the quintessential southern antebellum mansion, once the seat of one of the most successful tobacco plantations in the region. Previous owners of the property included Colonel Edward Carrington, who fought alongside General Nathaniel Greene in the Revolutionary War. Berry Hill lay in ruins for nearly 50 years before being meticulously restored to its original pre-Civil War grandeur. Today, you can enjoy gracious southern ambience in one of Berry Hill Plantation.

In the decades preceding the Civil War, most of the wealth of the county was centered along River Road. As fortunes rose, so did the mansions, equal to any in Virginia in style and elegance. Today, you can still see vestiges of the tobacco farming that made the county wealthy.

Opened in 1957 as one of the country's first permanent road racing locations, VIR reopened in 2000 as America's first "motorsports resort" to rave reviews. 30. Martinsville Speedway. Martinsville Speedway's 2007 season marked the track's 60th year of operation. Founded by H. Clay Earles the year before NASCAR was formed, Martinsville Speedway is one of the oldest tracks in America that's still a part of the Sprint Cup series. Beginning in 1947 with 750 seats, it is the only original NASCAR-sanctioned track still running Sprint Cup events. Richard Petty, now a car owner, holds the track's winning record with 15 victories. Although it is the shortest track on the NASCAR circuit, the 800 foot straights, coupled with turns banked at only 12 degrees, makes the track perform like "two drag strips with a turnaround on each end." The demanding layout consistently produces some of the wildest fender scrubbing and push and shove racing on the tour.
