Colonial Beach is one of the few remaining small seaport towns along the Potomac River. Head south and you reach Westmoreland State Park, where you can overlook the Potomac from its many vistas. A little farther down the road and you reach the George Washington Birthplace National Monument. It is now run as a colonial farm where costumed employees recreate sights, sounds and smells of 18-century plantation life. Next-door is Stratford Hall Plantation, the birthplace of Robert E. Lee. This location is also a re-enactment site with costuming, nature trails, a gristmill and a log cabin restaurant.

Cape Charles is on the Delmarva Peninsula. It has a railway history as the terminus of the Eastern Shore Railway and still operates a rail-to-bridge ferry terminal with freight service to Norfolk. This town has the feel of a time gone by. Take the opportunity to head to the infamous Chincoteague Island. Made famous by Marguerite Henry's book, Misty of Chincoteague, this island still has an authentic pony farm where they raise the animals made famous by this beautiful story. Similar to Tangier, there is little commercialization on the island, especially by the beaches.

The Tidewater is also home to Virginia Beach, the infamous stretch of sandy white beaches bordered by a wide boardwalk. Virginia Beach is always pulsing with life and there are various free seasonal events and other fun attractions such as the Cape Henry lighthouse, which is the oldest we have in the USA, built in 1792, as well as the actual landing points of the English along the coast.

There is a lot to be learned in this area about the powerful civil rights movement that has evolved in this area along the Mason-Dixon. Visit some of the first integrated schools in America along rural routes in Southern Virginia. There is rich Native American heritage in Southern Virginia, and parks like Occoneechee State Park are not only beautiful and abound with outdoor recreations, but the park also has a visitors center highlighting the living history of local Native Americans.

There is a movement to commemorate the rich textures of sound that originated in Virginia through "The Crooked Road" project. Events, jam sessions and performances will be taking place all over the Heart of Appalachia, recounting the evolution of bluegrass and traditional country music. It is a great way to take in some local flavor.

Northern Virginia has its fair share of fascinating historic attractions like the Alexandria black history museum and archeology museum. There are lots of parks and areas for outdoor recreation, like the Manassas National Battlefield Park, comprised of over 50 miles of hiking and biking trails where one can still observe the impact of war on the landscape. From Fredericksburg to Culpepper, visit 3 Battlefields, Fredericksburg, Wilderness and Chancellorsville.

Other Historical Sites in Central Virginia include many presidential estates in and around Charlottesville: Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, James Monroe's Ash Lawn-Highland, James Madison's Montpelier, and Patrick Henry's Red Hill. The National D-Day Memorial was built in Bedford to honor the community that lost more solders per capita than any other during the invasion of Normandy during World War II. Central Virginia offer everything from ballooning and camping to horseback riding and tennis, 11 State Parks and beautiful gardens. For cultural interests, see the spectacular Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, tour more than 20 Vineyards & Wineries, and enjoy events such as heritage festivals, steeplechase races and arts and crafts fairs.

The Shenandoah Valley is also home to a variety of impressive natural phenomenon like magnificent caverns and towering mountain ranges. Our Valley also has its fair share of culture. There are many museums and historical sites, from the antebellum era to the frontiersman, from the Civil War to Woodrow Wilson's Presidential Library and Museum. There is also wealth of talented artists in the Shenandoah Valley region. Their work is displayed in local and community galleries and open studios. The Valley's vineyards have grown and flourished. They invite our many visitors to taste the bounty of their harvests.

There have been many talented people attracted to the beauty of the Highlands, and it is said that country music was born here in the Blue Ridge region, in Bristol. It was here in 1927 that downtown Bristol hosted two weeks of recording sessions that have influenced subsequent bluegrass, gospel and rock and roll artists beyond measure. Visit the Birth of Country Music Alliance, or take a cruise along the Blue Ridge parkway, one of the nations most scenic drives.

And of course, there is Blacksburg, home of Virginia Tech. Stop off here to catch a NCAA Hokies game.
