Wine tasting today, Saturday November 30 in Charlottesville's Wine Country! 30 Nov 2013, 4:01 pm
Wine tasting was so much fun today as there were no crowds! Whenever there is a football game at UVA it keeps the locals out of the tasting rooms so better for us and our tour guests! And the fireplaces were burning making the atmosphere so cozy.
Stinson Vineyards (pictured) offered a barrel tasting of their port style dessert wine to be bottled next year sometime which was a treat!

Tasting Updates from Charlottesville Wine Country 17 Nov 2013, 7:20 am
Operating costs are rising as we can attest to here at Arcady Vineyard B&B and the wineries are feeling it too. Tasting fees have risen a bit - most are now up to $7 - $10 - it's pretty much averaging a dollar a taste. Still a much better deal than some other areas like Napa where we are hearing that $20 - $30 are the norm.
Out and about at some of our guests' favorite wineries we see that:
- Stinson's wines are a huge favorite with our guests. Besides the whites, they are still pouring the Turk Mountain's La Tour d'Afton 2009 which is a big hit with red wine lovers, as is their 2011 Meritage and Cab Franc.
- Pollak is one of the only tasting rooms pouring a 2010 Petit Verdot - a bold flavorful red. Their Chardonnay, Viognier, and Pinot Gris remain big favorites with our tour guests. And the Mille Fleurs is just delicious. We get a chuckle from our tour guests when we taste there. The question is usually "are we tipsy or are these wines all delicious??" Don't be so suspicious! They are that great!
- Veritas is out of the 2012 Cabernet Franc in the tasting room - is now tasting thier 2012 Claret which is a Bordeaux blend.
- King Family is no longer tasting the wonderful Crozet Rosé but added the "7", a delicious port style dessert wine
See you out in the tasting rooms this winter! The fireplaces will make for a very cozy holiday experience.
Thanksgiving in Charlottesville's Wine Country! 15 Nov 2013, 5:15 am
For those of you coming during Thanksgiving week please note that the tasting rooms are closed on Thanksgiving Day. We in the industry like to celebrate the holiday with our families just like you do!
So, plan your tasting tours before or after Thanksgiving Day! We still have some color in the trees, it will be beautiful driving around, and if chilly the wineries will have the fireplaces burning! It's a great time to shop for Christmas gifts! Give Virginia wine!
Winter Time in Charlottesville Wine Country 28 Jan 2013, 6:09 amThe weather has turned chilly and the wineries have the fireplaces burning! I am surprised at how many people don't realize the wineries are open year round!
We are quieter during the week this month and have used this time to update the inn! The Arcand has a coat of fresh paint, and now also the dining room!
Starting on January 28 we'll have Restaurant Week here in Charlottesville which is another great way to while away the chilly weather...although we will have warmer temps this week. Check out what's offered!!
Congrats to Wisdom Oak Winery! 19 Jan 2013, 8:52 amCongrats to Wisdom Oak Winery (formerly Sugar Leaf Winery) located just minutes outside Charlottesville!
Their Vidal Blanc and Cabernet Franc are being poured this weekend at an inaugural event at the White House.
Wisdom Oaks is busy expanding and we can't wait to see the new tasting room this March.
Virginia wines have been enjoyed quite a bit at the White House- Veritas has poured their Viognier, and Claude Thibaut's Thibault-Janisson Sparkling Wine as well, just to name a few.
Bubbles in Charlottesville Wine Country! 10 Jan 2013, 7:40 am
There used to be several wineries where tasters could enjoy samples of sparkling wines, but at this time the only winerues offering sparkling to taste in the immediate Charlottesville area are Trump Vineyards, (formerly Kluge) and Mountfair, usually known for their Bordeaux Blends. At Mountfair right now they are pouring the wonderful Thibaut-Janisson Blanc de Chardonnay.
The reason is that the wineries are now immensely popular for weddings, and as it takes two years to make a Champagne-style sparkling wine (second fermentation is in the bottle, creating the bubbles, then aged) the weddings have purchased most of the available sparkling wine. While Trump has three - two of which my favorites are the Blanc de Noir and the Sparkling Rosé.
Because of this many wineries don't even have it for sale, much less tasting. It's all already purchased by the booked weddings!
But wait!!! Recently we purchased the new sparkling from Afton Mountain Vineyards and WOW! It is delicious and we highly recommend it!! It is named Bollicine (not sure of the spelling since I don't have the bottle here but I do recall the Smiths told me it meant "tiny bubbles" in Italian). This wine is not available for tasting, but is for sale at the moment. And it is a WINNER!!
