Located on Main Street in Berryville, nestled between the Blue Ridge Mountains, The Shenandoah Valley is known for its beautiful scenery. The BTI offers southern cuisine with a modern edge. Sitting west of the main house are nine newly renovated guest rooms. Each room is individually appointed with a full or queen size bed and modern amenities. The BTI family looks forward to welcoming you and hopes to provide you with a pleasurable experience.

A dining experience at the Battletown Inn provides our guests with a casual, comfortable approach to traditional, fine Southern Virginia cuisine. Brian Whitson, our Executive Chef, prepares lunch and dinner menus that include fresh meats and produce that have peaked for the season. Our well-portioned meals are never pretentious; our aim is to provide our guests with a meal that they will share with their table mates and recall fondly long after they leave. The warm glow of the fireplace and comfortable seating creates the perfect ambiance to enjoy good food with your friends, family and/or colleagues.

 
Gray Ghost Tavern

Whether you wish to begin your meal with a glass of wine before being seated, prefer a light fare at the bar or wish to complete your evening with a nightcap before retiring to your room, consider the Gray Ghost Tavern. Located on the second floor of the restaurant, the tavern offers a complete bar, specialized menu and ample seating for a private area for two or a small party.

Patio Seating

Wish to enjoy our fine cuisine in an outdoor setting? Request our new patio seating (weather permitting). With heaters to remove the chill in the air on those cool nights, market umbrellas to eliminate the suns rays, and an outdoor speaker system to enjoy some subtle music, there's no better venue to enjoy a good meal. During warm weather there is live music on Thursday nights on the patio.

Corporate or Private Event

Consider the Battletown Inn for your next business meeting, birthday party or other special events. We are happy to accommodate groups of 2 to 100 in our dining rooms, on the patio or in the tavern. Private event rooms and catering are also available. Please inquire at the front desk for more information.

Originally constructed in 1809 by Benjamin Berry, founder of the town of Berryville, the Battletown Inn can trace its hospitality roots back almost 200 years. Serving first as a home to Mr. Berry's daughter, Sarah Stribling, the Inn was host to many gatherings in the small community then known as Battletown. In the later 19th century, wounded soldiers were cared for within the building while it served as a military hospital. Tales are still told about the distraught Union soldier who hung himself in what is now the Gray Ghost Tavern after learning his love had married a Confederate. And, to this day, many have insisted that they have experienced his presence.

In the 1920's the Inn began welcoming guests as the "Sign of the Motor Coach Inn." The name Battletown was adopted in 1936 when Mary Murray purchased the property and opened a restaurant specializing in country cuisine. Today the historic building has been renovated and revitalized. The Battletown Inn offers southern comfort foods with a contemporary twist in an elegant, yet relaxed setting. Executive Chef Brian Whitson prepares succulent dishes that are sure to delight.

History of Clarke County

Clarke County, named for Revolutionary War hero, George Rogers Clarke, was formed in 1836 from Frederick County. This area was part of Lord Fairfax's 5 million acre property. A young George Washington surveyed the area for Lord Fairfax. In the latter part of the 18th century, many descendants of Tidewater Virginia's most prestigious families moved here, bringing with them their plantation lifestyle and love of fox hunting.

During the Civil War, Clarke County was protected by Colonel John S. Mosby and his famous Rangers. Those local homes spared from burning by Federal troops owe thanks to The Grey Ghost and his men. During July 1864, Cool Spring Farm along the Shenandoah River witnessed the Battle of Berryville. In August 1864, during The Berryville Train Raid, Mosby's Rangers chased a group of Federals into town who took refuge in the Berryville Baptist Church, where bullet holes remain as evidence of the raid. After the war, largely undamaged Clarke settled back to farming. In the early 1900s, wealthy industrialists bought and restored many aging plantation homes to their former glory. Built as a private home for the daughter of Berryville's founder in 1809, it was renovated and refurbished with period antiques in 1943, at which time it was opened as an inn to the public. Renovated again in 2007, the owners took careful consideration in balancing the resurrection of the home's original architecture and unique nuances with modern amenities that offer today's comfort and convenience for their guests. This elegant inn offers nine luxuriously appointed guest rooms and some mini suites that come with whirlpool jets or Jacuzzis, ensuring a cozy, relaxing atmosphere.
