Guess what? Did you know that Christmas is only three months away? But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. First we have autumn to celebrate. While Oktoberfest is always a popular way to ring in autumn, two of our local orchards also offer up festivities for your enjoyment:

Green is slowly but surely being usurped by orange. Walk into any store, and you’ll see a sudden burst of orange, autumn-themed merchandise that almost rivals the coming fall foliage in its intensity of hue. You may have guessed by now that fall is coming.
If you caught one of our last blogs, “5 Reasons to Visit Afton in Autumn,” then you’ll know that a celebrated part of fall around many areas (including this one) is Oktoberfest.

“Rule your nest. Be an Alpha.” This is the motto of Afton’s newest establishment, Silverback Distillery, which just had its grand opening a couple weeks ago. Silverback, which shares its name with the adult, male leader of a group of gorillas, will be a welcome addition to the established wineries, craft breweries, and cidery in the neighborhood. If you stop by their tasting room, you’ll get a taste for these primate-themed spirits, including vodka, gin, whiskey, and bourbon:

The name “Crozet” is pretty well-known around the area of Virginia, primarily for the local city, but also for the man to which the name belonged—Claudius Crozet. This French-born civil engineer not only helped to found the Virginia Military Institute, but also contributed to a variety of bridges, railroads, canals, turnpikes, and, of course, the Blue Ridge Tunnel. (Is it any wonder that he is called the “Pathfinder of the Blue Ridge”?)
