Ruckman Haus Bed & Breakfast
The French Room
The French Room is on the second floor of the house. The room itself evokes memories of the French countryside: it is reminiscent of rooms in the inns that dot the small towns throughout the provinces.
Our French Room is decorated with a blue and yellow colour scheme. You'll sleep wonderfully when you lower the window shades and climb into the wrought-iron heirloom bed. And if you leave the curtains just so, you'll be gently awakened by the morning sunlight coming in through the French doors.
To take advantage of the quiet of this spacious room, we have provided an antique marble-topped French writing desk, which provides and ideal place for you to either read, write letters, plan your day or set up your laptop computer and take advantage of our wireless Internet access.
Our business travelers tell us that the French Room has one of the best work spaces of all our rooms, although they also report that our recent additions to the room have made putting nose to grindstone that much more difficult!
As do all our rooms, the French Room has a full private bath; this particular bath is done in a blue and white colour scheme to complement the rest of the room. There is a wonderful shower tiled in cerulean blue; it has an unusual arched entrance that will remind you of the old-world craftsmanship that is common in European inns. Of course, the bath is fully-stocked with signature toiletries and everything you might need to relax and refresh at the end of your day, or prepare yourself for an evening in San Antonio.
The French Room is very nicely decorated with numerous accents, turn-of-the-century drawings and artwork. The French Provincial dresser provides plenty of room for all your belongings. There is also, of course, a flat-panel television with full cable access, and a DVD player so that you can borrow and watch one of the many movies that we have provided for guests in the bookcase on the second-floor landing.
A wonderful recent addition to our home has provided the French Room with a private, second-story deck just outside a pair of new French doors. This deck is at the back of the house so it is very quiet; it is totally covered and even has overhead fans and lights so that you can utilize it on warm afternoons or in the evening. The deck has a wonderful view of the East Garden, and the sound of the garden's waterfall can easily lull you to doze in the comfortable, French-inspired, cushioned wicker furniture.
We invite you to spend as much of your leisure time as you wish on your balcony. Get a cool drink out of your in-room refrigerator, or stop by the kitchen for a glass of wine. Grab your laptop so you can wirelessly surf the Internet. We think that you'll quickly find that the new deck may well be your favorite place in what has become an indoor/outdoor suite.
Come and stay for a few days in the French Room. Begin your day with a wonderful gourmet breakfast; experience all that San Antonio has to offer; and relax on your balcony at the end of the day. If you stay in this lovely room just once, we can guarantee that you'll want to do so again and again.
Standard - $120/night Ruckman Haus is one of the few San Antonio bed & breakfasts that accepts single night stays for Friday or Saturday; the single night rate is $140. We also offer a corporate rate which is available Sunday-Thursday for our single-occupancy business guests.
The Highlands is that room you might have had in your house growing up- particularly if it was an older house with character aplenty. It was the room on the top floor, under the roof, that you went to when you needed a refuge. The Highlands is aptly-named, since it occupies the entire top floor of the house and is our one room that can accommodate three people. But the Highlands is also named for the general theme of its decoration, which reminds one of Scotland or the North of England. The room is done in a traditional Scottish country style. The Highlands has charming sloped ceilings, since it was originally the attic, and this contributes to the cozy feeling. If you are over six feet tall, however, you may find the Highlands less comfortable that our other rooms.
As you enter the Highlands at the top of the stairs, the main sleeping area is to your right. Here there is a queen-size, wrought-iron bed, TV and built in cabinets and small fridge. There is an exposed brick chimney that separates the master bedroom from the vanity area and the rest of the suite. The large vanity area is actually directly in front of you when you enter the room, and it has plenty of space for all the necessities for everyone sharing the Highlands.
Just beyond the vanity, in a separate room, is one of the highlights of the Highlands- the bath. The bathroom has hardwood floors and a large slipper claw-foot tub with a hand shower. The Highlands bath is truly unique.
Some folks (you know who you are!) may not think that a bath is just your speed, but don't worry- your host has thoughtfully provided a flat-screen television (with remote!) in the bath (and ESPN is easy to find!).
But the Highlands has yet another unique feature- an entire additional wing. Here, you will find an old wrought-iron twin bed which can be used for a third person- adult or child. At the end of this additional wing is a cozy nook with an antique table and two overstuffed chairs- an ideal spot to curl up with a good book or have a glass of wine and review your day's activities. The nook also has matching windows that look out to the west. This is the spot that will remind you of the coziness of that room in your childhood home, and the place to which you will repair for your quiet time during your stay with us.
Particularly if you have more than two in your party, we invite you to book the Highlands Loft, where you will have a large space all to yourselves. Even for a single person, though, you'll quickly come to value the Highlands as the perfect retreat.

The English Room
Most of us will never wrangle an invitation to stay at Kensington Palace, or at one of the royal family's country estates, but you'll definitely find that staying in our English Room is about as close as you can get.
The English Room is an elegant room, decorated throughout with furniture and accessories in the style of the Victorian and Edwardian periods.
It is located on the second floor of the home, with views to the front yard and to the west. Full window shutters allow you to take advantage of these views or to close yourself in for complete privacy.
At one end of the bedroom there is a wonderfully large, four-poster bed that you'll feel like getting lost in. There are English tables on either side should you wish to snuggle up with a good book.

At the other end of the bedroom, you'll find a comfortable, overstuffed chair that provides a convenient place to read or relax. This end of the room also contains an English armoire with concealed flat-screen television and DVD player, and plenty of drawers for all your things. There is also a hanging closet, of course, which is located just inside the room.
The English Room bath is one of the nicest in the home. It features a rectangular, oversized shower that provides not only the standard shower fixtures but three body jets as well. If it turns out that you find yourself wishing you'd brought your masseur/masseuse with you, don't worry; a few minutes in this elegant shower will make you quickly forget the oversight.
Standard - $110/night

The Luxembourg Room
As you might suspect from its namesake country, the Luxembourg Room is our smallest room, but it is just as elegantly appointed as any of our other rooms. But also, just like its namesake country, it is a model of efficiency even given its relatively small space. It is an ideal choice for the business traveler who needs a comfortable bed, all the modern conveniences and a place to relax at the end of the business day. As our least expensive room, it is also a good choice for anyone new to the bed and breakfast experience, and experience that usually results in frequent repetition!
Obviously, travelers need a place to sleep for the night, and the Luxembourg Room satisfies that need with a beautiful, queen-sized sleigh bed which, according to numerous guests, is one of the most restful in the house. The Luxembourg Room has a built-in armoire and vanity and a separate bath with a roomy shower accented with glass blocks. There is Internet access and a flat screen TV with DVD player.
While the sleigh bed in the the Luxembourg Room is certainly relaxing, we have recently created a wonderful new addition to the room- a second-story covered deck. This deck, along with the new French doors that open out onto it from the bedroom, provides our guests with a great place to unwind, read or have a glass of wine. With the weather in San Antonio being as moderate as it is, the deck is usable the year 'round; there are overhead fans for the warmer months and additional lighting for evening.
So, if you're a business or leisure traveler on a budget, or you just need the very comfortable basics, you should definitely give the Luxembourg Room a try. Put it together with all the other amenities of the house and the gourmet breakfasts and you have an unbeatable travel experience.

The Sun Room
Bright. Airy. Open. Expansive. The Sun Room suite is very aptly named. The Sun Room suite is located on the second floor of the house. If you are looking for a room that is the kind of place where you could spend weeks at a time and never feel cramped, the Sun Room suite would be your choice. The Sun Room suite has unique features that are not duplicated anywhere else in the house, and only rarely equaled at B&Bs elsewhere. The Sun Room suite is an accommodation of superlatives.
Begin your tour of the Sun Room suite by entering the room and the bedroom proper. The bedroom in the Sun Room suite contains a king-size iron bed and chest in the Spanish Colonial style. The other decorative elements in the bedroom all harken back to the decorative heritage of Old Mexico. Yet, you will find all the modern conveniences, including flat-screen TV, private phone, DVD and Internet access. By itself, the bedroom is a spacious room, but is only part of the suite.
The bath is done in dark blue tile, and features a shower with showerhead, handheld shower and three body jets- all of which combine to give you an invigorating experience, whether you are preparing for your day or relaxing at the end of it.
The separate vanity area is outside the bath, which is convenient when two people are occupying the room. The vanity has a beautiful and extremely colorful ceramic tile bowl of a type and of a decoration usually only found in the best homes in Mexico.
The sun room itself is a bright comfortable room, surrounded with windows on three sides, and contains ample seating for reading and relaxing. To help with the relaxing part, you'll welcome the soothing sounds made by the waterfall in the East Garden, and you'll have a wonderful view of the entire garden just below your windows. Read; relax; converse; work. It's your choice, for in your private sun room, all are possible and all are pleasant.
Your tour of your amazing suite isn't done yet, though; not by a long shot. You will find a circular wrought iron stairway, when you reach the top of the staircase, you'll find yourself enclosed in a four-sided cupola, perched on the roof of the house, directly above your suite and reachable only from it.
Open the cupola's door and step outside onto your own, completely private, rooftop deck.
Here, in an area invisible from the rest of the rooms in the house, you can relax on the two "steamer" loungers and sunbathe, read, simply appreciate the morning and drink your coffee and tea or relax in the afternoon with a glass of wine.
Your private rooftop deck is the final amazing feature of this most comfortable suite, and it is one of the features that make the Sun Room by far our most popular room. Reserve it for your stay in San Antonio. Even considering all that we've had to say about it, we are absolutely positive that you won't be disappointed.
