Where it all began!
In 1908, Matilda Kunkel Hartung and Louis W. Hartung built a dream! A 2-story neo-classic home was constructed at 124 W. Woodlawn Avenue in a quaint little neighborhood that would eventually become one of Texas’ largest and most prestigious historic districts. The Hartung’s resided there for more than 50 years and in the early 1970’s, the house (and neighborhood) was inducted into the U.S. National Registry of Historic Places.
Meet the architect!
Atlee B. Ayres was chosen to design and build 1908 Ayres Inn Bed and Breakfast. As one of the best known architects in Texas from the early 1900’s through 1950, Ayres designed and built many homes in Monte Vista using Neoclassic, Craftsman and Mediterranean, Frank Lloyd Wright, Victorian and Greek architectural styles. Residences were only a portion of his portfolio – he also designed and built courthouses and museums, the 30-story Smith Young Tower in San Antonio and several buildings on the University of Texas Austin campus.
Meet the innkeepers!
Michael Eifler and Hector Llanas currently own the 1908 Ayres Inn. A native San Antonian, Mike worked as an Information Technology Computer Analyst for USAA for over 20 years with a side passion of historic house restoration. Hector originally hails from Laredo but moved to San Antonio at a young age. His interest peaked early in his career in the field of interior design – a talent that proved quite useful during the renovation of the inn. From design to the finished restoration – the inn became a real expression of Mike and Hector who love to entertain.
The transformation of 1908 Ayres Inn!
In 2003, the home at 124 W. Woodlawn was purchased by Mike and Hector. Deciding a new career was in order – that of Bed and Breakfast owners – it wasn’t until after considerable research on where to start a Bed and Breakfast that they were brought right back to the house they just purchased. It was perfect! But they recognized right away in order to compete in the San Antonio Bed and Breakfast market they would have to create a one-of-a-kind B&B that would merge a modern lifestyle with the historical character of the home. Total renovation began in the fall of 2006 taking a full year to complete. Currently Ayres Inn is the only 4-Star B&B in San Antonio.“The Ayres Inn blends the coziness of a traditional B&B with the high-tech conveniences of a luxury resort.” — Better Homes and Gardens
“What a B&B should be. Modern sophistication and heritage allure, cool gadgets and classic antiques. Ayres Inn opened in summer of 2007, seems more like a diminutive luxury hotel than a typical B&B. There’s not a hint of Victorian chintz here – thank goodness.” — Lonely Planet -
