Travelers are always looking for memorable and relaxing experiences. Let’s discover more through the words of our innkeepers. Many thanks to Michelle London for sharing her own secrets with BBOnline.com! Why do most travelers stay at your inn?
The majority of our guests are pleasure travelers who come for a romantic getaway, to explore the history and scenic vistas in Gonzales and surrounding towns, and to take advantage of the unique shopping venues (mainly antiques). We also get our fair share of business travelers and those in the area to attend weddings, reunions, and other family gatherings.
What are you best known for? What makes your inn unique? What do you love most about your inn?
Belle Oaks is known as one of the most beautiful restored historic homes in the area. As a B&B, we are known for our gourmet breakfasts (particularly our award-winning Pecan Orange Bread) and the attention to detail each guest receives during their visit. We offer personal services such as setting up a historic homes tour with a local expert, recommending things to do in the area, buying tickets in advance for out-of-towners coming for a specific event at one of our local theatres, arranging for flowers or champagne as a special surprise for a milestone birthday or anniversary, and making dinner reservations. Whatever the request, we will do our best to fulfill it.
As the innkeeper, I love that I am the custodian for such a beautiful property, and that I can share it with guests during their visit.
If someone has never been to your city, what is the #1 reason to come visit?
Definitely the history! This area was settled by American pioneers whose spirit can be felt in every historic building and legendary site in Gonzales. As the place where the first shot of the Texas Revolution was fired, and the only settlement to answer the call for reinforcements at the Alamo, there is a legacy here that visitors will find exciting and worth exploring.
What’s the best compliment you have ever received about the inn?
"We love coming here. It's our home away from home, and you have become our friends."
We've heard this more than once, and it is the highest compliment we could hope to receive.
What’s the best kept secret about the area?
There is a vast inventory of outstanding historic architecture that is not visible from the main thoroughfare. We have several public building and private homes designed by famous architects such as J. Riely Gordon and Atlee Ayres.
Also, the drive between Gonzales and Moulton when spring wildflowers are in bloom is one of the prettiest scenic drives in the state of Texas.
If a traveler is staying at your inn for 4 nights, what should he/she do in the area?
The historic tour we can arrange for guests is a must -- it is a great way to learn about the history of the area and get "the scoop" on many of the town's historic homes and families.
Shopping on the square is also a must to visit our antiques shops and boutiques. Our local theatre shows first run movies, and the Crystal Theatre has several outstanding productions each year, including a monthly country western music show.
In the spring, a drive to Kloesel's Steakhouse in Moulton (housed in a historic building that in the 19th century served as the Moore Hotel) will take you past gorgeous fields of wildflowers (and it's a pretty drive any time of the year). Spoetzl Brewery, home of world famous Shiner Beer, offers brewery tours weekdays at 11:30 and 1:30 (additional tour times added in the summer).
For the sports enthusiast, we have a beautiful golf course (as well as a course for disc golf), fishing at nearby Lake Wood, hiking along beautiful trails in Palmetto State Park, and kayaking on the Guadalupe River.
For the cowboy in all of us, J.B. Wells Arena regularly features roping, barrel racing, bull riding, and cutting horse events, and IS the official home of the Texas State Junior Rodeo Finals.
A trip to Gonzales wouldn't be complete without eating at least one meal at Gonzales Food Market, where Texas barbecue REIGNS supreme!
Pioneer Village and Gonzales Memorial Museum are also stops well worth making.
Is there anything within walking distance of your inn?
Belle Oaks Inn is located two blocks from downtown Confederate Square, within easy walking distance of several shops, the Lynn Theatre, and Running M Bar & Grill. The neighborhood is also conducive to a walking tour of several historic homes.
What is your favorite restaurant/food in the area?
Gonzales Food Market for barbecue is hard to beat. In nearby Shiner, Shiner Restaurant and bar is housed in an historic building and has Shiner Beers on tap, as well as several microbrew offerings. Blake's Cafe in Luling is a wonderful homestyle restaurant with the best onion rings on the planet and a killer prime rib. Kloesel's Steakhouse in Moulton is perfect for a bit of a more upscale dining experience.
