      General Grants stopped here just 9 blocks away from the front door before marching South to Shiloh, only 1 1/2 hours away by auto now. The park is beautifully recreated as a National Park. The battle is impossible to envision without the narrative tapes -- which we have to lend. Be sure to take time to travel across the state line to Corinth, MS and break into the downtown area by breaching the Wal-Mart ring." There are a handful of well maintained homes in the center of the city which housed various generals. Also well worth the effort are the two forts Grant captured on his way south -- they are just an hour north. Other of fields of combat include Parker's Crossroads, scene of one of General Nathan Bedford's skirmishes. It is just 30 minutes east. If you want to see more, continue South to Vicksburg or go East to the Frankin area around Nashville. So many important battles here in the "West"! A tour of Jackson informs war buffs of the five railroads which crossed here and made Jackson so crucial to both sides.
